Death Valley in June?

We'll be in Vegas in mid June and always take a road trip when we're there. Have been to Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon. Are we out of our minds to consider Death Valley for a day trip in June? Just want to see some of the highlights on the Southern end, don't really need to see Scotty's Castle. Are we crazy?

Well, I went in May one year...it was pretty hot but you know, it's a dry heat! We did do Scotty's Castle and some 'resort' a few miles away. It was hot but fine - take a cooler with water, stand in the shade when you can, wear light clothes and do a lot of sightseeing from the car! I was dreading it going in but actually ended up loving it.

Stay hydrated. Drink on a schedule. Leave off the diuretics like coke, tea, coffee, and beer. They do more harm than good.

Keep the head covered to shield from the sun, and use plenty of sunscreen.
You get the burning rays from the reflections and directly.

Some people think sun tans which result in skin cancers are healthy. But take it from an old prospector, those 9 inch basal cells that require 11 inch incisions to remove are no picnic. Yes girls, that lovely beach tan will probably mean surgery in 25 to 30 years. Mind did.

And you will look like an old handbag at age 55 if not sooner.

The first time I visited was in July. Stopped at the campground to fill water bottles. The water that came out was hot enough to take a shower in. It was 105 there today. The bright side is will not have much traffic on the roads.
Walk out into the dunes near Stovepipe Wells for sunrise. Sun is hidden behind mountain range before sunset. Zabriskie Point also good for sunrise. Dante's View is generally cooler and breezy. Walk out into the Devil's Golf Course, Badwater, Golden Canyon or Mosaic Canyon before mid-day and should not be too hot. If you feel your car is up to a long washboard road go out to the Racetrack and look for the "sliding rocks" in the evening. There is a trail you can follow as far as you want to get an upper view of the area. A great hike (but steep) is to Keane Wonder Mine. Pass by towers used to haul the ore cars to valley floor from the mine at the top of the trail.
Be sure to drink lots of water and wear a hat.

as long as you weren't planning to go to scotty's castle, i could see doing it in a day trip as long as you stay on the south eastern part. i belive the furnace creek ranch will let you pay a day fee to use their pool. might be a nice way to cool off. i'd leave vegas really early to enjoy the cooler part of the day. just got back from there last month. we loved it.
