Day Trips From Houston, Tx

Have a full day in Houston this coming Friday w/ nothing to do. Not interested in the museums or anyother place in the city I've read about. We'll have a rental car so getting away won't be a problem.
Need to hear some good suggestions for day trips.
How far away?
What is there to do?

Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham is always popular. They give free samples!

Galveston and the seashore is an easy day's drive, too.

I don't think there's free ice-cream at Blue Bell. You get a complimentary cone if you do their $3 tour. Or skip the tour and pay for the ice cream.

As for day trips, how far are you willing to drive?

East: Lake Charles, LA has riverboat casinos, and there are several widelife reserve near the coast.

North: Really not much. Perhaps Lake Conroe and Lake Livingston.

Northwest: College Station (Texas A&M, Bush Library); or further out to Austin. Brenham is on the way too.

South: Galveston. You can stop by NASA on the way, and/or Keemah.

Are the bluebells and indian paintbrushes in bloom there yet? Probably so. Do not miss that, it is miles of fields in crimson red and deep royal blue, all over the hwys. starting just off of I10 west and Brenham turn off area, through to College Station.
No interest in Johnson Space Center? It is top notch.
Kemah (south on I45- be careful about timing re traffic, but same can be said for I10 west too) for seafood and boardwalk.

A couple of ideas.
South on I45 from downtown is the NASA complex (exit Nasa Road 1). It is about a 40 minute drive from downtown -non rush hour. If you continue on Nasa Road 1, you will come to HWY 146 . Take a right and about 1 1/2 miles down the road is Kemah and the marinas that feed from Clear Lake to Galveston Bay. A pretty waterfront eating and entertainment area. Kind of Disneyesque.
If you stay on I45 going south you will come to galveston in about another 35 minutes. Not a gorgeous beach but a beach nevertheless. Head to the Strand-the historic district or to the beach. Take a right on 61st to get to beach or stay on I45 (becomes Broadway) and follow signs to Strand.
It is wildflower season so if you head out 290 west towards Austin, you will be greeted with fields of bluebonnets. Gorgeous. The Round Top/Belleville area is great for antiquing and seeing quaint Texas towns.
Austin is too far-3 hrs west- for a day trip.
Sealy -West on I10 has a good outlet mall.
But Houston is a great city to explore. Try an Astros game, antiquing on Westheimer, the Galleria, etc. Enjoy.

How about a Port Authority tour and then try to get a fishing boat?

The bluebonnets are out. The Texas Department of Transportation has a map of wildflower and foliage conditions. http://www.dot.state.tx.us/hcr/main.htm.

The bulk of the sitings are in and around Washington and Brazos county. Here is a link to wildflower watch in and around Washington County. http://www.brenhamtexas.com/wildflower.htm

The Bluebell creamery tour is $3.00 with a complimentary scoop of ice cream. Link is http://www.bluebell.com/about_visiting.htm.

If you want some good homestyle cooking, Royer's Round Top cafe is in Round Top, about 20 miles from Brenham. Make sure to have pie.

Also around the area, you could visit some of the local wineries. They are okay, not great. I've been to Messina Hof, which is pretty good, Pleasant Hill, okay, and Lehm Berg, yech. Here is a map to some wineries in the area.

My wife would say drive to Shiner and tour the Shiner brewery.

Several years ago, Texas Monthly published a book on Day Trips around Houston. You can pick up a new copy at Barnes & Noble, and can probably find an older one at Half-Price Books.

wsoxrebel,

Actually, it is Round Top (Round Rock is north of Austin) and yes it is. Also known for Pecan Pie and Chocolate Chip Pie.

Another place to try close by is the Brazos Belle, sort of Texas/French country food.
