Cross country tips
Need please and and all travel by car cross country trip from central New York to flagstaff az beginning to middle January. Sights. Attractions. Cheap places to bunk. Gas. Must sees. Traffic. Mountains. Snow. Peeps. Thanks!! Happy Traveling !!!!

I would head south probably pick up I-81 in PA and then head west on I-40. Pick up the discount magazines for motels/hotels in the welcome centers at each state.
Pack a cooler with food and drinks and keep a survival kit with blanket, warm clothes, etc. in case you get stuck.
Fill your gas tank when it gets to a half.
Download an ap like WAZE for road conditions and traffic information.
Continually monitor weather and change plans or just stop if things get bad.
What is a "must see" for me might not interest you at all, I'd have no interest in spending time in cities, but would want to see the natural and historic attractions along the way.

You know, there are these things called guidebooks. Fodors actually publishes some. They will tell you what there is to see, and then you can decide what interests you. Buy one. Or borrow one from your library.

Mountains and snow would be what I was hoping not to see this time of year. I hope you have chains.
Motel 6 and Quailty Inn are my top two cheap places. Also look up hostels in each area you pass through- most are on the coasts but you might get lucky, and a bunk would be about half the price of motel 6.

The night before heading into Flagstaff should be spent in Albuquerque. The Rt. 66 Hostel is good to save some money.

Get a map and at least one guidebook. You can download a map of the US and go to the library. They are big buildings with lots of books about lots of things.
We know nothing about your interests--only that you are very young. Most of us have heard about places we might like to see away from our homes--how about you.

Gas stations are readily available along almost all roads now.

You could have a great trip or the kind of trip you would have if you had left yesterday. Look at the travel news this morning on TV and check out the 70 car pile ups (multiple) and dead people from storms.
Leave your phone play list turned off and listen to local weather on the radio, don't drive after dark or early in the morning when the roads are icy, prepare to spend an extra night waiting out the weather here and there.
Fun places on the I-81/I-40 route: Charlottesville, VA; Asheville, NC; Nashville and Memphis, TN; Norman, OK (about 20 miles off the direct route); Albuquerque. You should see snow in the mountains in VA, NC, and maybe TN. You may find skiing in these areas as well as off the route in NM.
Many of these states are extremely strict on dope, DUI, open bottles in cars. If you are young and/or grungy, you may get stopped.
