Christmas in Newport, RI?

we're considering going to Newport, RI the week between Christmas and New Year's. I haven't been to Newport - know it's very popular in the summer but are things (restaurants, etc.) open during the Christmas holidays too? Any advice or info most appreciated. Thanks.

I was in Newport a couple of years ago for New Year's Eve. The town was pretty packed for those 2 days with "First Night" celebrations, mansions decked out for the holidays (special tours and concerts). My hotel was also fully booked as there were weddings going on.

The town is very pretty during the holiday season. The mansions are decorated and the ice skating rink downtown will be open for sure.

A couple of restaurants close during the winter months, but the remainder are all open. I think it would be a nice relaxing week

Only a handful of Newport mansions are open during the winter season. Check the website to make sure. However, those that remain open are beautiful decorated with Christmas stuff. Not sure if they're still doing this, but long time ago when I went in late Nov, the mansions were offering cookies and eggnog at the end of the tour!

I love visiting for a few hours over the Christmas Holidays - maybe even a day or two, but a week?

It is a wonderful holiday destination, but realize that, as far as I know, none of the mansions that are open during the holiday season ever had a winter holiday, as these were 'summer cottages' All the decoration has nothing to do with the history of the families. So to me, although beautiful, it is a bit vegas/disney

I would not hesitate to spend a couple of nights over the holidays.

I lived in Newport for 16 years. FYI, only a few of the mansions are open around Christmas and throughout the winter, as they are expensive to mantain and usually not heated. They were build as summer cottages. However, the ones that are open are beautifully decorated. Many restaurants are open in the wharf area. Some smaller shops on Thames are closed. Two nights at that time of year is plenty of time in Newport, because outdoor activities are weather dependent. The Hotel Viking has a lovely spa. Hope this helps. Enjoy!
