Charleston/Savannah- best time?

Haven't been before, and we can be flexible about travel dates- when is the best time of year to visit- re: weather, hurricanes- lack of! etc.

Also, how many days would you allow for each? Once I get that figured out, I'll check out the previous posts for places to stay, restaurants, etc- unless anyone wants to mention any not-to-miss places. Thanks!

Last week of March, azaleas and dogwood should be at their peak in Savannah and the city is absolutely stunning in full bloom, plus the weather is about perfect, neither hot nor cold.

Spend 2 days minimum there, 3 days minimum in Charleston. Do Savannah first, bloom peak will be there first.

thanks, OO. I was half expecting that the fall would be the best time; but your reasons for going in the spring make sense to me!

Any other words of wisdom, anyone? Also wondered what particular part of either town would be good to stay in-

Google for their festivals. Try to time it when they are doing their spring tours of homes. Even if you don't go on the tours (of gardens and/or houses - all of which are lovely) you will be there at what they hope will be peak bloom time.

Fall is nice - actually every time of year is nice but to be there in spring during full bloom - nothing like it.

We went to both a few years ago in early April--it was glorious. We were in the midst of the Charleston Spring Festival, with home and garden tours. Everything is in bloom in April, and the weather is not hot yet.

Another vote for the middle of April nvl325. I was in Charleston two years ago in the middle of April and it was beautiful and the weather was wonderful. Of course not having been in Charleston in autumn I cannot comment regarding how it is then.

When the azaleas (glorious) bloom in Charleston and Savannah can vary, of course. It can be anywhere from late February to April ... We've hit it just right some years, others we were late. I'd spent at least three nights in each city, and you'll wish you had more! I always love being in either place ... even in July, but the rest of the year is better!
