Cell phone service in Moab

My husband and I will be traveling to Moab in April and are taking our iphone 5's as our GPS device for driving directions. But I've been reading that cell phone service is sketchy in this area. Would it be better to rent a Garmin GPS or the like for traveling?

I have Verizon (live in Utah) and in some areas, the cell phone service is great. But in others it is not. Are you planning on taking lots of backroads? I like GPS for directions, but you have to remember--there are not lots of roads there! I do just fine with a Rand McNally map. And even if--or especially if--you are planning on doing the backroads, you are better off with a larger scale topo map or a Rand McNally recreation map or something like that. Because it lists which roads are closed in which conditions, which require 4WD, etc.

DO NOT depend on a cell phone or a GPS on the back roads of Utah.
Buy yourself a DeLorme Atlas. https://shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DEL...&section=10096
I did use my GPS to find a couple of Earth Caches and geocaches. I found the dinosaur tracks at Copper Ridge 22 miles north of Moab (Earth Cache) and a nearby geocache hidden under a rock.
I also found the Crystal Geyser along the bank of the Green River and a couple of geocaches near the Earth Cache.

Your not going to get lost in a car in Moab or Arches.

I rarely use maps anymore. My procedure these days is to depend on my Garmin GPS. I use the Garmin Mapsource app to create waypoints prior to my trip. I also load up a spare GPS and carry extra batteries just in case. I used this procedure in Moab, setting waypoints for the arches, etc. I wanted to visit. I also used this procedure to visit the rock art in Horseshoe Canyon near Moab. But I agree with spirlbulldog that you don't need detailed maps for Moab. The maps provided by the park should be sufficient.

My iPad with Verizon service worked fine in the Moab area. Mapping was good there too, I used both google and waze for that
