Cancun/Cozumel/Yucatan advice?

Cancun/Cozumel/Yucatan advice?
Hi! I am thinking of going to Cancun/Cozumel in February 1998 and I need some advice. Basically, I want to have the fun of Cancun with the peace and quiet of Cozumel. In other words, I want to be able to have a fun party time without being one of the zillions of pasty-skinned tourists crammed into the Cancun Hotel Zone. But perhaps Cozumel is too far away to be able to "commute"? What about Isla Mujeres? Or, how about a slightly quieter area (hotel) in Cancun, but on the beach? Or what about other parts of the Yucatan?

Hi! I'm originally from Mexico, now living in Montreal, Canada. For your fun time but not tourits trap type of deal, Isla Mujeres is your best bet, although it might be a little too quite. Have you thought of any of the Club Med in that area? I think you might find that although they are also full of tourists, the people are a friendly lot. You can also choose not to join any of their activities and just roam around. There are excursions to the archeological sites, too. I can't think of any hotels outside of Cancun but near a beach, sorry. It's been a long time since I was there!. Buena suerte

The Ritz-Carlton Cancun is wonderful...beautiful beach, rooms, pools, service, restaurants. Far from the Hotel area you are talking about. It never seemed crowded to me. We actually only went to the ugly crowded and dirty "Hotel area" once so my daughter could get something from the Hard Rock Cafe. I was certainly glad we did not stay in that area.

There is a nice all-inclusive on the lagoon side of Cancun called the Club Las Velas. Being at the north end of the island, and on the lagoon side, it is quieter than the Hotel Zone. The tourist buses come by all the time so you can get into the Zone if you want excitement, but Las Velas is fairly laid back and comfortable (not fancy). It is an all-inclusive resort - meals, drinks, lodging, etc so you might not have much incentive to search out restaurants, bars, etc.

Have been to Cozumel & Yucatan but avoided Cancun like the plague. Cozumel is nice and much quieter than Cancun, but has a lively downtown area if you want some action. Look in Playa del Carmen just 44 min. south of Cancun if you want a similar area on the Yucatan peninsula that may be easier for you to get to.

Definately stay in Cozumel and visit Isle Mujeres.
If you must stay a few days in Cancun, the Omni is nice and so is the Villas Plaza. In Cozumel, the Plaza Las Glorias is a favorite of divers and the Stouffer Presidente is gorgeous (and you won't be bored by too much quiet, but will not feel "touristy" either). Visit Tulum, rent a jeep and explore, have fun!

I would like to know if you discovered a nice place (NOT IN THE HOTEL ZONE), that's quiet and on the water perhaps north or south of Cancun or on the way to the ruins.
