Bryce Canyon: where to stay when THE lodge is booked
Hello Fodorites--
Any suggestions for place to stay near Bryce Canyon when the lodge is booked at the time we want to go there ? Any cozy cabins or condos (in addition to hotel/motel recommendations). We'll probably only be there 2 nites.
Thanks!

We have stayed on two occasions in the cabins at Bryce Canyon Inn www.brycecanyoninn.com which is located in Tropic a short drive from Bryce.

Ruby's Inn is very close to the entrance. It's an OK motel, not great. Restaurant at Ruby's is OK (sort of like a Cracker Barrel). Not many options up there.

I loved Ruby's. It is the ideal location and the dining room is very user friendly. We were there at lunch time and ordered off the menu rather than the buffet. It was reasonable and delicious. The service was good too because most diners were serving themselves at the buffet.
The food I had at Ruby's was far superior to what I ate at the Cracker Barrel in Topeka, Kansas (which is the only Cracker Barrel at which I have eaten because that is where the 95-year-old nun I was entertaining wanted to dine).

I don't know when you're planning to be in Bryce but in-park is always booked well in advance by tours.
Eventually reality sets in and they release rooms in the last couple of weeks.
Don't check online.
Call Xanterra daily and even twice daily. You want to be on them as soon as they have rooms.
I did that two years ago and got all of my dates at bryce, Zion & GC.
Call, call, call. Eventually you will be on a first name basis with the telephone operators. But you'll also get your dates.

People make fun of Ruby's. I also stayed there and it was fine. It is a large collection of several motel buildings and assorted other things - restaurant, photo shop, general store, laundrmat, etc. Seems very out of place in such a rural environment, and that is what I think pushes people the wrong way.
We stayed for convenience - we were able to get into Park early AM/late PM to see sunrise/sunset, deer and other animals. The US Parks service shuttle into Bryce leaves right from their door. Husband and dtr booked a horseback ride and left right from Ruby's. It is certainly not a resort, or quaint, or in keeping with mood of National Park - but it is a fine place to sleep and access other things the area has to offer. We usually stay in Park lodging when visiting National Parks, but you really can enjoy everything about the Park without waking up in Park lodging.
So keep calling for in-Park lodging, but do not view your trip as ruined if you motel it at Rubys. We were there a number of years ago and had a great local meal in Tropic, UT at a place called the Hoodoo Restaurant - I have no idea if it is still there. Complete with relatively untalented singing cowboy who took frequent drink breaks - and the alcohol did not improve his singing. But so authentic we still talk about it years later (the restaurant had great local trout and incredible pies)

There is a beautiful new Best Western just across the street from Ruby's. We stayed there and were very pleased with the nice breakfast and the large pool. It is not far from the entrance to the park, and we saw antelope along the road.

Stone Canyon Inn is a nice B&B where we stayed several years ago, in the small town of Tropic, just east of Bryce. It's in the trees with a quiet, secluded location and beautiful view of Sunrise Point at Bryce. They have rooms and cabins. We found the hospitality wonderful and the tiny town of Tropic is cute. It's also on the way to Escalante Grand Staircase Nat. Monument, if that's on your agenda.
