Bronx Help to visit hospital

We need to fly into LGA and get to the area of Alb. Einstein College of Medicine to visit someone with not much time left.
Staying in Mahattan doesn't seem convenient and we know nothing about the area in the Bronx.

Any help on a hotel in the area or logistics of getting there would be very helpful.

Residence Inn Bronx @ metro center atrium came up on Expedia.

Anyone, anyone!!!!

I am sorry that you need to get there ASAP. I used to work at a hospital and they usually can give some recommendations to help select a close hotel so I took a look and found this http://www.einstein.yu.edu/visitors/ it should take you to some hotels. I wish I had first hand knowledge of the area but don't so hope this link helps you some. Hopefully someone can help further.

All of the hotel choices are in Manhattan - near a subway line for easy access to the hotel. There are also choices in Westchester but for that you would have to rent a car.

The Bronx is primarily residential and there are very few hotels. I have seen a couple online and could not reco that anyone stay in them based both on neighborhood/location and what appeared to be their use (not for tourists).

We won't be tourists, just need to visit a friend before he passes.
Any suggestions on how to get there from LGA---how much will a cab be? And where we could stay for 2 nights.

What would you do?

The hospital site says its located near the Robert Kennedy Bridge (otherwise known as the Triboro) which is the bridge one usually comes over from LGA… so that should be an easy trip. Can't comment on the cost…. but cabs are expensive these days. I always plan on at least $25 for such a trip.

Also the hospital's web site suggests the Marriott Residence Inn. How wrong can one go with a Marriott? Especially for your situation.

Good luck. Hope it's an easy trip.

P.S. I think one pays the bridge toll coming from Queens. Last time I checked it was $5.00…. it will be added to the cab fare. And don't forget a tip… usually 20% these days -

(But I never tip on the toll.)

This is a brand new rather nice hotel, and it's right across from the hospital. While the area isn't the greatest, I don't think you'll have any issues. You aren't here to be tourists, and there's absolutely no problem staying in the Bronx. I think you should count on at least $30 for the taxi, not including the toll and tip, which will bring the cost up to more like $45 (you pay the bridge toll, which is now over $6, both ways). Get a car service for the trip back to LGA (ask at the hotel for a recommendation, and make the reservation the night before).

I am familiar with the area. It is a very safe neighborhood, pretty close to LaGuardia by road. Why not call one or two car services and ask what they charge from the airport. Public transport from Manhattan means a train the then a short bus ride, or long walk.

I don't know of any hotels but see if you can find info about hotels for Fordham University which is a long walk or short taxi ride from the hospital.

You will be close to the fabulous Little Italy of the Bronx, no hotels but interesting if you have time, or need a restaurant after visiting hours.

I would try to find a hotel near that part of the Bronx, if I were in the same situation. With the schools and the hospitals, there must be a couple of decent-enough places to stay.

Thank you again for the prompt responses. It relieves the anxiety of staying in an unfamiliar place with such a short time for research.

Marriott Hotel looks like the way to go. Easy cab ride(or car service) from LGA and probably easy to get a cab to Little Italy for dinner. You're right that after visiting we will need a decent place for dinner. Applebee's, close to the hotel, only goes so far.
Any suggestions for dinner would be welcome.

As usual, Fodorites come through.

The concern with some of the hotels in the Bronx is not that they are inconvenient for tourists but that they are used for other purposes (that is, rent by the hour for trysts or are used to house the homeless). There are few hotels in the Bronx and I don't know any I would put someone in.

and I am not worried about the area of the hospital but the areas some of these hotels are in.

If you can find the hotel Doug mentioned I would look at reviews on tripadvisor and if it looks OK book it.

This is a very nice, brand-new hotel that DOES NOT rent to homeless people or by the hour. It's an upscale chain hotel meant for people who are visiting the hospital or working on education courses at Albert Einstein. It's particularly suited to long-term guests, of which there are many. It even works for tourists who don't mind a somewhat longer commute into Manhattan.

Out of curiosity I just checked Trip Advisor… 107 Excellents…. and 16 Very Goods. No other ratings. -

So now….. what we need to concentrate on is a nice place to have dinner.
I'm all too familiar with hanging around hospitals and the need for
emotional therapy. I'm not familiar with Arthur Ave. etc…. wish I were.

Not sure how easy it would be to get to Arthur Ave from the hospital location, but if you get there...I highly recommend Zero Otto Nove! Great food.

DebitNM… this is off topic…. but I gather you went to Zero Otto Nove.
Did you have the pasta in foil? I had something like that in Sicily and tried to duplicate it at home til I finally gave up -

My boss needs to go to that hospital often for work. Many taxi drivers she hails in Manhattan get lost once they cross the bridge to the Bronx. Even when we reserve a car service days ahead, some drivers are unprepared to find their way in the Bronx. Therefore, be sure to bring directions, or mapping app if you prefer, as a backup in case the driver doesn't know the way.

Ellenem-------good tip. We'll print out a map.

He's been moved to Calvary Hospice right in the same area so hotel plans remain the same. It seems to have a good rep. Which was good to hear. Don't know why he's way out there when he lives in Manhattan.
