Boston to Campobello Island

In late August my wife and I will be leaving Boston to visit friends in Campobello Island.
We will be on a 4day trek up including staying 1 night in Campobello.
Can the Fodors crew of experts give me any advice on where to stay and any possibilities of short side trips to interesting places for sightseeing or shopping? We are aware that many areas are booked such as Bar Harbor. We have also done most of NE but not much above the Bar Harbor area.

Thanks

B & C

We spend a week "downeast" every summer at Edgewater Cabins in Sullivan. They will most likely be booked in late Aug, but worth a try! This is one of the most spectacular pieces of property on the Maine Coast. The cabins are on a point overlooking Sullivan Harbor, Frenchman Bay and the Tidal Falls.

Definitely take a side trip to The Schoodic Peninsula. It is absolutely beautiful. Most visitors never make it over to this part of Acadia National Park because it is not on MDI. You can drive almost to the top of Schoodic Head and hike less than 1/4 mi to view most of Frenchman Bay on a clear day. The surf at Schoodic Point is impressive.

Quoddy Head State Park is another great area to explore. It is in Lubec just south of the bridge to Campobello. Sometimes the lighthouse is open for tours.

We are making our first trip to Eastport this month to visit family. Supposed to be a cute town in Eastport with B&B's and shops, restaurants, etc. I went to Bar Harbor years ago and Acadia was spectacular. Late August might have some openings as many kids go back to school for either sports or an August start date.
