Boston 8hr layover

I have 8 hrs to kill at Logan, noonish till 8pm.....uber? any ideas other than staying at the airport?
Any public transportation to zip me to the universities, or interesting parts of Boston, and get back in time for my flight to France??
Thanks!

It's very easy to get the free Silver Line special bus from the airport to South Station. (It takes just a few minutes.) There you can transfer to the Red Line subway.
From South Station, you could walk to the Italian North End (restaurants, cafes, Revere House, Old North Church) and/or Quincy Market (shops, restaurants). You could then pick up other parts of the historic Freedom Trail.
You could take the Red Line from South Station to Park Street and walk charming Beacon Hill to see the traditional brownstones. Visit the shops along Charles Street.
You could take the Red line from South Station to Harvard Square, or to Kendall to see MIT. There are bookstores, shops, restaurants near both.

As Samba indicates, the historic area of Boston is compact and can be covered on foot in a reasonable time period.

I think the Red Line to Park St. is your best bet.

How many hours do you really have once you have allowed for time incoming and for how long you have to be there before you ongoing flight.
