I used to live in Bloomfield and grew up in the next town to there, Montclair. Bloomfield is your average middle class suburb. Shops, movie theaters, generic restaurants. But, you are only 20 minutes from the greatest city in the entire world!!! Montclair, the next town over is like a little microcosm of that fantastic city (New York, by the way). There are tons of restaurants, all sorts, bars, theaters, some museums, and lots of movie theaters. Should not be a problem as a vegan, there are lots of restaurants to choose from in Montclair and Whole Foods in Montclair will has all sorts of healthy foods.

Hey, adrin: there's no such thing as an individual state forum....look at the posts to your left...they're for the entire U.S. Picking the state you want merely helps in a search later on, not when posting. Quitcher bitchin', especially when you don't know what you are talking about!

The Bloomfield/Bloomfield Hills/Bloomfield Township area is a very upscale suburban area outside of Detroit. One of the highest per capita incomes in the USA. Alot of auto executives live here. There are multiple nice restaurants-The Lark (chosen BEST restaurant in USA a few years ago), Andiamo's, Tribute, Rugby Grille to name a few. Have a great time!!!

You'll find little to interest you in Bloomfield apart from the friends you make (not knocking Bloomfield but it's more or less a family oriented bedroom community for folks who work in NYC and commute). As already mentioned, Montclair has lots to offer and is really close by - just up the road on Bloomfield Ave. Easy bus ride and you could even walk there in 30 minutes or so. I'm not familiar with clubs in general due to my age and interests but Diva's on Bloomfield Ave is supposed ot be good. Has a front room with food and laid back music that draws a wide range of ages (even folks in their 40's like me!) and the back room is completely dance oriented and gets the younger crowd. If you're looking for hard-core, straight-edge and the like.... it's interspersed here and there throughout north Jersey and of course there's a great scene in NYC, which is easy 30 minute ride on bus or train. There's a funky little independent CD store on Bloomfield Ave in Montclair - it's on the left going up the hill in between Blue Sky restaurant and Cafe Eclectic (great espresso bar cafe with very mixed crowd and live music on weekends). The CD shop focuses on indie stuff and the hard-core scene - they have local publications that list what's going on in the underground music scene. I go to Montclair for movies, food and books. The Wellmont, the Clairidge and the Screening Room have all the newest indie and foreign films, loads of good restaurants including a few very good Indian restaurants with excellent offerings for vegans and then there's the Montclair Book Center - by far the best stocked and most eclectic independent book store I've ever visited. Have fun - there's lots to like about north Jersey and the adjacency to NYC is unbeatable.

Adrin: to paraphrase Chris Rock, just remember that "when you are starving, pork chop is your friend". Vegetables have souls too, you know.

Adrin - put any concerns you may have to rest.... you'll find it much different here than CA but you'll find lots to interest you and keep you busy and plenty of cool people. Don't hesitate about getting into NYC when you have free time on the weekends - you are gonna love it. It's got an unbelievable amount of energy and gets your adrenaline pumped up just being there. Based on your stated interests, I'll suggest that you check out St. Mark's Place area and all the spots around NYU, spend some time wandering through the Lower East side (LES) and be sure to grab a crew and wander in Chinatown. It's nothing like the Chinatown in San Fran - lots of rough edges here and a large, vibrant residential community. Also..... be sure to chek out the legendary CBGB's - it's grubbier than it ever was and still a mecca for the hardcore scene.
