You didn't mention price or location, so here's a few that are on the top of my list for Thai food(I live in NYC):
Pongsri Thai Restaurant
244 W. 48th Street
New York, NY 10036
212-582-3392
Great for pre-theatre dining since it's so close to most Broadway shows and it's very reasonable.
Little Basil
39 Greenwich Ave.
New York, NY 10014
212-645-8965
Great little west village place.
Regional Thai Taste
208 Seventh Avenue
New York, NY 10011
212-807-9872
Good Chelsea location thai place.
Royal Siam Thai Cuisine
240 Eight Ave.
New York, NY 10011
212-741-1732
Another good Chelsea location - this is usually my first choice when in this area.
Toons Cuisine of Bangkok
417 Bleeker Street
New York, NY 10014
212-924-6420
Another good west village choice.
Good luck!

I second Pongsri - great tom kai gai, curry and young cocount ice cream. MMMMMmmmm!
I think one time in the hosted forum (go back to Fodor's home to find), there was mention of Thai restaurants in New York. I asked the same question and am pretty sure that's where the response was posted. Have a great trip.

I'vre beent o Pong SRi and enjoyed it although it's a bit frenetic and noisy during the pre-theater rush due to its location. I actually prefer the food and atmosphere of Royal Siam - small and homey with good food and a very friendly staff. Haven't tried Vong but I will advise AGAINST a Thai place I tried on W. 42nd - it's just past 8th Ave If I recall correctly - on the north side of the street. Don't remember the name but looked int he window many times and thought the decor was very cool - quite elegant. We finally ate there and it was mediocre food and abysmal service at best.

A little offbeat, but...
On Chowhound.com, I read about a place called Joey Thai. It's at 17 E. 31st Street, and it's primarily a Blimpie's. So all the furnishings look like a Blimpie's, but they also serve Thai food.
They apparently don't do nearly as much Thai business as they do Blimpie business, but apparently the people who ask for Thai items get treated especially well and Joey (from Bangkok) bends over backwards to accommodate any Thai food request.
If I get back to New York sometime, I'll give Joey Thai a try!

Donna, all the answers so far single out Manhattan Thai restaurants--are you only interested in Manhattan? Because really the best and most authentic Thai in the city is at Sripraphai in Queens.
Personally I'd recommend skipping Royal Siam and Regional Thai Taste; I found both to serve bland and carelessly prepared food. Pongsri is pretty good, but as Owen noted, can be a bit of a zoo before the shows start.
Joey Thai/Blimpie is on 30th between 5th and Madison (I haven't been there). For anyone looking to try it, remember that the word is, stay away from the shrimp, as it is not resh enough. Owen, if you make it there, please also post your impressions on Chowhound--people there are trying to keep tabs on the place.
