Best Phoenix resorts in January?
We're a family of four travelling from Australia to Arizona and Utah in January. We are looking for a nice resort in Phoenix that will appeal to our young teenagers. A heated pool would be great. Also, if anyone has the time, would you be able to suggest how you would spend two weeks in Arizona/Las Vegas? We are concerned about driving on slippery snowy roads. Thanks

The Scottsdale area (right next to Phoenix) has some really fun family resorts. The Hyatt there has a fabulous pool complex that can keep teens busy for hours with slides and all kinds of things. The Scottsdale Fairmont Princess also has a wonderful pool complex.
The Sedona area would be a fun trip for that time of year as its red rock formations are simply otherworldly, and kids really like them. The Enchantment Resort is THE place to stay, great for kids but pricey. There is a terrific state park in Sedona called Slide Rock State park that has a natural water slide in its creek. My kids loved it, although we were there in summer. I[m sure you can find out about it online doing a search for Arizona State Parks. If you are on a tight budget, stay in one of the cheap motels (Super 8 for example -- you can request a frig or microwave in your room) because there is so much to do that you'll never be there too often.
Sedona has other state parks with hikes through old Indian ruins. The mining town of Jerome is fun. There is a restaurant in Sedona called the Cowboy Club that serves rattlesnake, buffalo, and prickly pear cactus fries. My kids also enjoyed a pink jeep tour through the desert with an interesting guide.
Check out the Tuzigoot ruins on the way from Phoenix to Sedona. Very interesing. You might check out familytravelforum.com for more ideas in the area -- there's lots on Las Vegas in it.
Renting a four-wheel or all-wheel drive might be a worthwhile additional expense to put your mind at ease about slippery roads.

I attended a business conference here about 13 years ago and swore, that if I ever return to Phoenix, it would be here - The Pointe South Mountain Resort <http://www.pointesouthmtn.com/>. It is not cheap, but you get good value for your money. There is so much to do. They also have some very good on-site dining options, particularly Aunt Chilada's and Rustler's Rooste. I think it will appeal to your entire family!

I concur about the Pointe. In fact, I like it so much - I live there (in the attached residential neighborhood of course)!
The Pointe has a water park on property, with a huge water slide and a "river" type attraction. They also have spa services, gym, and a challenging 18 hole golf course with beautiful desert views.
If you decide to stay and golf - make sure and say "hi" when you get to the 9th hole!
