Beaches near Philadelphia
Summer is here...well, almost.
I am looking for the closest to Philadelphia beaches, wether river or ocean or lakes - whatever, as long as I can swim in it. It has to be within 1 hour from Philadelphia so we can go on weekends. Thanks
Anyone can point me into right direction?

mclaurie...that forum link provides opposite info to what I am looking for. Thanks
GoTravel,
I am in Montgomery county. I was thinking Delaware...
We also discovered Bucks County River country where you can rent boats and tubes and go down the river but no swimming, so I thought there must be some more somewhere.

Hi Ziana. I, too, live in in MontCo. Everyone in Phila. seems to go southeast to go the beach; we go straight east. To get to Pt. Pleasant it's about 1 hr. 15 mins. My favorite beach is Island Beach State Park, and that's about a 1.5 hours drive. We leave early Sat. morning and never hit any traffic (except MAYBE on the NJ Turnpike if we get a bit later start). We're also not fighting the hordes of traffic going to Ocean City, AC, Wildwood, etc. We often do day trips to the beach.
P.S. If you go to Island Beach, you must leave early. There are two large parking lots, and once they are filled, they "close" the access. This can happen as early as 11am on really busy weekends. There are nice restroom/changing facilities, a snack bar and a great beach. One side is ocean, the other side dunes. No development, no tacky boardwalks, no high rises. And here's the best part - the fee is $10/CAR.

Hi. We usually leave between 8 and 9am. If it's a busy holiday weekend, like Labor Day or July 4th, plan on getting to Island Beach by 10 or 10:30. You don't have to get to Pt. Pleasant that early, but it is nice to get there early and park adjacent to the beach.
This is just me, but I don't think I could handle swimming in any rivers near Phila. I think too much about run-off from the roads. There is a great bike/hiking/running path along the Wissahickon Creek that's all wooded and beautiful. The water looks clear and clean, but after a hard rain, there's a detectable odor near runoff areas.

I am one of the most famous residents of Philly and I always go to either Rehoboth Beach or Lewes Beach in Delaware. Pt. Pleasant is nice, but the waves are always too strong to swim. Poodle Beach at Rehoboth is great if you are gay or gay-friendly.

Go to mapquest.com. Type in your address and Rehoboth and you will get dirctions. Or just take 476 to 95. Get off on Route 1 in Delaware, which turns into Route 13, then 113. Get off on Route 1 and proceed to Rehoboth.

Ziana--you'll get a lot more useful advice if you lay off the rude responses to people who are trying to help you with this request that is just plain UNREALISTIC in the first place.
Look at a map. There are NO ocean beaches within an hour of anywhere Montgomery County. Period. So forget the ocean or re-adjust your time frame.
My family did day trips to the Rehoboth area from the corner where Montgomery, Berks & Lehigh counties meet and it took us about 3 hours each way. From the Montgo country border near Chestnut Hill, I could get to Spring Lake in about 1 hour 20 minutes if the traffic gods were smiling and I left early. Everybody does NOT know about Spring Lake but visitors with brassy, know-it-all attitudes don't get warm welcomes.
Yes there are rivers around, but they're not rivers with big sandy swimming beaches.
There are some smallish lakes that have swimming beaches in Montgomery County. They usually have swimming clubs--some require membership. Have you looked into those? There are some lakes with public swimming in the lower Poconos, but check first about fecal matter outbreaks that close the beaches to swimming.

As someone who has a ski chalet in the Poconos, I can tell you that it is at least a two hour drive from Philly.
Another place to look at is Eaglesmere, near Williamsport, PA (home of the Little League World Series), in the Endless Mountains. You could swim at pristine Lake Jean, nearby, and hike the beautiful falls at Rickett's Glen State Park. Eaglesmere is very posh.
