Anyone in NY up for a GTG 6th or 8th of May?

I'll be in NYC the first full week of May (4th through 11th) for the Wagnerian Ring cycle of operas. My free nights will be the 6th and 8th of May. Unfortunately it'll have to be a weeknight, as the weekend nights are mostly taken up with opera nights.

Anyone feel like having a GTG at that time?

I've already heard from Centralparkgirl and she's willing and able on the 6th.

Hope some of you can join as we're trying to get a Fodors' editor to come too !

On the 8th I'd say how about the Morgan or NY Historical Society which are open free.

Enjoy the Ring. We're attending Cycle III, too.

A suggestion for those 6 p.m. curtains: Cafe Fiorello across Broadway from the Opera House.

Laurie: we'll probably go for the 8th as it is the beginning of the weekend, so please do put us on your calendar!

Sue: Will the Morgan or NY Historical Society have food and drinks? Almost every single one of the GTGs that I've been to have revolved around dining.

bspielman: You, too! Enjoy the Ring!

Thanks for the suggestion of the Cafe Fiorello, will look into it! My dining schedule on performance nights is really not mine to make - but I CAN suggest something!

The Morgan has drinks and a restaurant which I havent eaten in but one of my tour guide friends swears by their hamburgers. You might also want to consider the Rubin Museum which is free 7-10 www.rmanyc.org -- There's quite a bar scene (and they have food) both gay and straight and the galleries tend to be empty so you can wander en mass.

MOMA is too much of a zoo on free fridays but the Folk Art Museum next store has no food but they do serve drinks

NY Historical sometimes has more drinks than other times but you could also organize something at any UWS restaurant afterwards. Check and see if they are doing special food stuff.

Museum & food sounds great to me. So true about MoMA though!I know of a very good inexpensive UWS Italian if anyone is taking suggestions and we decide to go in that direction. I heard the Morgan is really great too.

Thanks, ET, for getting this started & I look forward to meeting everyone.

The setting for the Morgan Dining Room is really nice.
http://www.themorgan.org/visit/dining.asp

MlleFifi, my husband & I had dinner at Fiorello before we went to the Met. Make sure you go early, esp if you have a large party. It is very popular with opera-goers pre-performance. MlleFifi likes the antipasto bar, but it was so crowded the night we went that we ended up sitting in a booth. At the bar, you can just point to whatever antipasto you fancy and they serve it to you right away.

Re Café Fiorello, you can make a reservation at their website. They don't participate with OpenTable.

Sue: Thanks for the great suggestions! I would never have thought of combining a museum with drinks and a GTG! That's a terrific idea!

Does anyone know where the Fodors NY offices are? It would appear that we may be able to get either/both Katie and Doug to come join us. Should we choose a location that's close for them? Or does it matter?

Sue: since you seem to know the locations - would you mind just choosing a place and we'll see how everyone feels about it? The Rubin looks fine to me, but the art is all Asian and especially Buddhist, Tibetan, South Asian. Some people may want something a bit more European? Sounds like a fun place tho!

laurie: we might just decamp after the drinks to some local restaurant!

When Shanghainese and I plotted the Shanghai restaurant visit in San Francisco, the eating and talking went on for four hours!

yk: thanks for the link! It looks like a great place, GTG or no GTG. Still a great place to visit.

bspielman: will you be able to join us? Please do!

I'm not choosing locations - I'm a tour guide here -- I'll show up if I'm still alive after work - And I'm new to the Fodor's board - I chime in for fun - I did not call this meeting - those who called it should do the work.

Morgan - you can go to the restaurant before the museum is open Free at 7 and then drink in the drinks area

Historical Society is going to have some great photo exhibits by then -- I'm going to a tour guide's tour the day before - Eat later on West Side

Rubin -- The Art isn't me but it's an amazing space and the drinks were good and appetizers looked interesting -- easy to wander around the exhibits and talk or hang by the bar area and drink

Met cafeteria is in the basement but it works too. Drinks on the roof but it's a scene

Hi, Sue!

No problem!

I apologize if I came across as if I were pushing off work on someone else. That was not my intention.

I was just hoping that you might help with the choice of a meeting place since you had come up with a number of wonderful suggestions. Which do you think would be the best for a casual meeting? Should we just meet at a museum or decamp to a restaurant later?

I've not been to any of the places Sue mentioned except the Met cafe downstairs, so if anyone else wants to chime in to help me with a choice here, please do.

BTW, Sue: welcome to Fodors! It can be a really fun place to post and the spirit of community can be amazing!

Hope to meet you in New York!

We'll have come into the City from Jersey for three nights already that week, plus one more night on Saturday. Don't know if my wife wants to make it a five-trip week--LOL! I'll keep watching to see where you've finally chosen to meet, then let you know (don't mean to imply that the place is the criterion, of course; just want to see if and whether it's finalized).

OK, Joy agrees five nights in one week is not one too many, so we're happy to join you. I'll keep an eye out for when and where. We promise not to wear our Nibelungian helmets. (Just kidding! But you have seen these, haven't you? Who said Wagnerians don't have a sense of humor!)

I'll still be going to the Museum of American Finance on Wed (my day off) and might want to explore Stone St bars afterward if I had company or head to the Museum of Jewish Heritage which is free 4-8.

Re Friday - Least convenient for me is probably the Rubin but it might be the most interesting to you -- I still want to try the hamburgers at the morgan and I think you'll like the upcoming exhibits at www.nyhistory.org

I don't love the Met cafeteria but it functions.

And did I also mention that the International Center for Photography is open pay what you want Friday evenings. That's near all the food in Grand Central...and where are the Fodors offices??

Sounds like you're set for the 8th. If I can make it for a drink, I will, but it's unlikely. Have a good time!

Fiorello's - I sit at a table in the back and still go up to the bar to choose the antipasti that I want. The waiter gives me a piece of paper to give the person behind the bar and then they bring it to my table.

Hi, Centralparkgirl: not at all!

Per your advice, I've posted in three different forums and it's pretty evenly divided between the 6th and the 8th, so I COULD do two nights!

Please hang in there with me! I've been so busy with so many different plans (on other things) that I've not had the time nor energy to carefully plan anything for this trip! When I come on Fodors, it's to relax and get my mind away from all the planning and planning - BTW, do you know how much area does one bag of stucco cover? Never mind - arghhh!

I was thinking that a restaurant somewhere around central New York would be convenient for everyone from whichever other part of town. What do you think?

Thanks for your great suggestions, Sue!

OK, here's what I've been able to come up with so far for two different nights and two different GTGs:

Meeting on the 8th: Morgan Library Restaurant
225 Madison Avenue @ 36th Street
Time: 6:30pm (would this be a good time for everyone?)

The Morgan seems like the perfect location and is pretty much centrally located and is a walk of a few blocks from several metro stations. It's open until 9pm, which would give us more than sufficient time to dine before they close. Also admission is free from 7-9pm.

Meeting on the 6th: I'm having problems planning this one. The Rubin is open only until 7pm, although the Wednesday night festivities begin at 5. Is 5pm too early for some people? If not, then we could join the festivities until 7pm and then decamp to some restaurant for the food part.

Rubin Museum
17th Street & 7th Avenue in Chelsea
Time: ?

Or we could choose a totally different location for the 6th.

Please feel free to give your opinion as honestly as possible. I would really appreciate your thoughts so that we can firm things up soon!

Looking forward to these GTGs!

Regarding the Morgan on the 8th: can we do 5:30 or 6:00 instead? Also, do we have to pay museum admission to dine?
