Any Traditions at Fenway Park?

Hi, all - my husband got us tickets to see the Red Sox play the Yankees during our trip to Boston. Are there any traditions at Fenway Park? I know you sing Sweet Caroline - any other good ones? Also, is there a favorite food to get at the park? Hot dogs are always good - do they have any other fan favorites we should check out? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Don't wear a Yankees shirt!
Do try a Fenway Frank but be prepared to have to run to the bathroom afterwards!
Give a nod to the Green Monster.
Have fun. When I lived in New Hampshire I went to lots of games at Fenway and it is a joy.

We play "Dirty Water" after a win. There's nothing like hearing the first few bars of that song, it never gets old.

The pre-game show is filmed right outside the park on Yawkey Way, you could get there early to get a peek. Right next to the pre-game booth is RemDawg's concession stand, it's owned by our beloved broadcaster, Jerry Remy.
Food is not Fenway's strength, your best bets are a sausage from one of the carts outside the ballpark or a Fenway Frank.

Have a great time! A Sox/Yankees game at Fenway is an incredible experience.

ROFLMAO @ frank_and_beans

Well, what about screaming "Yankees Suck?" Can't you alternate?

OP - be prepared to break out the Kevlar and hard hats if the Red Sox fall behind... this might be the series that determines who's going to the playoffs and I promise you it will get ugly if the Sox lose.

Wow, you must have spent a pretty penny to get Sox-Yanks tix!

gates open 2 hours early if you want to watch the visitors take batting practice.

the best food is the Cuban sandwich from El Tiante's out on Yawkey way. otherwise, not much in the food department.

Also, please PLEASE understand...Fenway park is not at its best when the Yankees are in town. The crowds are louder, more obnoxious and more drunk. There are generally a lot of Yankee fans there, and there will be more bad behaviour than at other times.

And yes, there will be chants of "Yankees Suck". The crowd may yell at Jeter, and wear "Jeter Sucks" tee shirts, however they will not chant that. They are more likely to chant "Lugo's Better!" (something that worked much better when it was "NOmar's Better!"). They will boo Johnny Damon mercilessly. They will yell "Bal-co" or "Ste-roids" at Jason Giambi.

And if, oh IF, you are so fortunate (or unfortunate) to see Roger Clemens pitch for the Yankees, I suspect you will hear booing the likes of which haven't been heard in Fenway before. (mind you, if Roger is going to start this game, you could also sell your tickets before the game and perhaps finance a childs college tuition with your take!)

If Roger should happen to get shelled, and leave early, you are virtually guaranteed to hear "Where is Roger -- in the shower!" from the crowd.

chinacat - I'm an Astros fan from Houston, so seeing Roger Clemens would just be painful! I think this is going to be a pretty exciting game. Yes, the tix were pricey, but it's for my birthday, so hubby decided to go for it. Actually, this seems like more of a present for HIM; he's a baseball fanatic - LOL!

He rented me the movie "Fever Pitch" so I could see Fenway Park and the Green Monster. I'm definitely going to cheer my lungs out for the Sox.

What's the history behind Sweet Caroline? I can't wait!

Go Sox!

Practical pointers. Food inside Fenway is awful - eat first. (Have been to a number of other MLB parks and Fenway is by far the worst).

Seat numbers in some area of Park are really odd - there are deadends, seat #1 sometimes in middle of row, etc. About 50% of the time someone is sitting in our seats - ask usher to deal with it for you.

If you wear an offensive anti-something t-shirt it is likely you will be asked to turn it inside out - this is something new this year.

The chanting is always Yankees Suck - not Jeter Sucks - and will also be chanted at non-Yankees games.

Red Sox players do not wear their names on uniforms for home games. Yankees never do. Get a program.

Beer stands close at seventh inning. No beer sold in stands and limit of 2 at concessions.

If you buy peanuts in seats, vendor will throw them from a great distance to you and then somehow remember who you are and come collect money. If you fail to catch the toss, you will be booed.

If you catch a homerun ball by Yankees, throw it back onto field.

Officially, no backpacks allowed into Fenway, but they will allow smaller backpacks in - they will be checked upon entry and will be tagged. No food or beverages allowed in from outside, and they will enforce this.

Do not leave before end of game, even if score is a blowout either way.

No re-entry if you leave.

The Fenway seats are narrow and uncomfortable, and many point at a weird angle. Only the most expensive seats have cup holders. Leg room is non-existent.

Since present ownership took over some years ago, the bathrooms actually work.

If you are taking Green Line MBTA after game and going towards downtown, walk away from Kenmore Square to Fenway stop - get on inbound train there. It will be significantly less crowded. If you have become insane and are driving, plan to spend $25-50 to park during Yankees series.

You could probably fund a week in Europe for what tickets will be going for to scalpers.

I am of a different opinion - Fenway IS at its best during Yankees series. No more intense 9-inning atmosphere in all of baseball.

What a great bday present!

If you're interested in pre and post game libations....head to the Cask or Game On pre-game and check out the roof deck of the Baseball Tavern post game.

Unfortunately, it will be impossible for you to observe one of my favorite Sox fans activities: periodically chanting "Yankees Suck" when we are NOT playing the Yankees!

LOL - Anonymous!

I forgot Lugo was with the Sox now - another former Astro...

gail, thanks for the tip on throwing the ball back. The first time I saw that was when we went to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field. The poor person who caught it didn't know to throw it back, and I thought there was going to be a throwdown. Everyone was going nuts!

Red Sox fans like to get drunk and fight. Try it when you're there.

Gail, I totally agree with you that the baseball is best when its Sox-Yankees. But my experience has been that the fans are at their absolute worst behaviour. it can be not fun, depending on where you are sitting. It does help if the Sox are winning however.

Volcanogirl, as an Astros fan I'm sure you understand how Sox fans feel about Clemens. But keep this in mind...he spurned us not once, not twice but THREE times. (1998, 2006, 2007). And he still is probably destined to go in the Hall of Fame with a B on his head...even though most Sox fans would prefer he get the NY he craves on his bust...or perhap more appropriately a simple hat with a $$ on it.

has anybody else noticed that there is a lot less random chanting of "Yankees Suck" since 2004? it still happens, but not all the time.
