Amtrak station in Philadelphia -- close to anything?
I may be in Philadelphia next month for just an afternoon, roughly noon to six. Yeah, I know that's not enough time to do much of anything...but it can't be helped, and I hate to waste my few hours there languishing in a train station.
How far away is the Amtrak station (30th Street)from some of the tourist sights, e.g. Independence Hall, Art and Science Museums? What kind of transportation would you recommend?

The Philly train station is called the 30th Street Station because (surprise!) it's located on 30th Street. Independence Hall is located on Fifth Street. You can take the Frankford subway line between the two in about fifteen minutes (about as much time as a cab if traffic is typical) and the cost will be a lot less.
You could walk to the Art Museum (and the other museums) in about fifteen minutes, but make certain you have a map. The museums are due north of the rail station, but you have to go east in order to cross the Schuykill River. Very do-able, but also easy to get lost if don't have a good sense of direction.

Hi Leilani,
Do NOT languish in the train station BY ANY MEANS. Six hours will be enough to do A LOT of fun exploring in Philadelphia. Either take a taxi as others suggest, take the SEPTA commuter train (right in 30th St. Station) to Market Street East station (it's free to travel from 30th St. Station to Market St. E. with an Amtrak ticket stub).
Go to the Reading Terminal Market (closed on Sundays), visit the stores of Chinatown, go to Old City (Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, Liberty Bell), walk down to South St. to see funky South St. or visit the Italian Market with its decently-priced fresh high-quality produce. If you like upscale shopping, go to Rittenhouse Square. You will have time to have a nice lunch and a good several hours of exploration (I really like to grab a coffee on/near South St. and watch the people traffic). For a six o' clock train, I would grab a taxi from Center City Philadelphia at around 5:30.
Have a BALL in my favorite US city!
