Age for rental cars
A niece is planning a trip with a friend. She is 20 and the friend is 21. Will they have trouble renting a car? I have it in the back of my mind that some rental car agencies require you to be 25. However, I'm not sure and it may vary by rental agency.
Does anyone have any experience with this?

Most rental car chains will not rent to someone under 21. Any driver younger than 25 is often charged an additional $25 per day.
If the 21 decides to rent the car, anyway, the 20 year-old must not drive it. That violates the contract and makes the renter liable for all sorts of additional charges.
Most major rental agencies also require them to have a major credit car.

Thanks for all of the reminders.
I knew from renting cars ourselves that you have to pay extra for a second driver. However, I don't know that I would have remembered to warn them about that.
Thanks too for the tip about the major credit card. I wouldn't have thought about that either.
DebiNM - Thanks for the heads up on the hotels. I remember being at a hotel counter years ago when some young adults were turned away because they were not a certain age. That is certainly something to check on before they go.
And thanks for the figure about how much the premium could be.
I don't know what I did before there were such things as the Fodor's Forums!

They also need to be sure they have a high enough limit on the card.
Rental car agencies typically put a "hold" on the card that coversthe deductible on the insurance - often $500. Alsohotels will usualy put a significanthold on for guests that age. So they should be sure they hae a credit limit at least a couple of thousand more than they plan on spending.
(Last summer I was renting a car and 4 young people from Ireland had no credit left on their card due to "holds" put by hotels. They had to go to the bank to get $500 cash to leave as a deposit on their car rental.)
