Afternoon tea in NY, anyone?

Hi!

Two friends and I plan on visiting New York late in November. Would any of you recommend some good places to enjoy an excellent cup of tea? I'm especially interested in full afternoon teas. I heard that the Morgan Library serves afternoon tea. Anyone here know anything about that?

Also, any tips on special hotel deals are welcome, too. We have already reserved a room at the Comfort Inn Central Park West, but we're still open to other suggestions.

Thanks!

Here is a listing of the places that serve tea in NYC:

I believe that tea at the Morgan Library is not a very special event. If you want something nicer you might try one of the hotels such as The Plaza or The Peninsula.

The Plaze is really quite lovely, usually with a string quartet or pianist, and a lovely full tea.

The Pierre (5th Ave & 60) is my favorite tea. The food is fabulous and the service impeccable. It is served in a beautiful rotunda room with clouds and cherubs painted on the ceiling. Much less busy and crowded than the Plaza. You won't be disappointed!

Thanks for the tips, everyone! I do know about the catteacorner, but I wanted some specific recommendations.

The Pierre does sound interesting - will have to look into that one.

All the best,

Rebecka

I think tea at the Plaza is overrated. Love the Pierre. My favorite (although I haven't done a thorough exploration, alas) is the Waldorf.

For something a little different than a hotel tea, there's a charming place called Tea and Sympathy on Greenwich Avenue (downtown), owned by a couple of British women. You can get tea, scones, sandwiches, or more substantial fare (like bangers and mash, or scotch eggs). It's been a while since I was last there but I loved their tea, and they were friendly.

If it is not too late to offer a suggestion: Try the Mark Hotel (East 25th & 77th Streets) They serve an wonderful afternoon tea that surpasses many I've had in London hotels that are supposed to be "famous" for their teas.

Tea and Sympathy is great, also Felissimo at W 56th St and the Palm Court in the Plaza Hotel..high tea to harp music~The Mark Hotel, and a place called something like Lady Mendelbaums Parlor, I will try to look that one up-there goes the memory again~M

The St. Regis does a very nice afternoon tea; in fact, I was there last weekend for tea. It is calm and quiet, much more serene that at the Plaza. The setting is posh and pretty, there is a harpist, the service is very nice, and the scones are outstanding. It is $35 for the full array of sandwiches, scones, and sweets, and they will bring you as much food as you want. They will also let you linger for a couple of hours. Reservations are recommended. Last Saturday, there were a dozen women in stylish hats, replete with feathers and silk flowers, enhancing the decor.

Tea & Sympathy is great, but a very different expeirience--homey and casual, rather than elegant and serene. It all depends what you're looking for.

Tea and Sympathy is owned by two English ladies, and many of its customers are English, it is authentic in it's way, just not as posh as the Plaza, etc.

I belive Lady Mendelbaum's is in the Inn at Gramercy Park, on Irving Place near Gramercy Park at about 17th Street. It has a good reputation. The Inn is a beautiful mannsion-like place. This would probably be the place to go for an elegant tea dowwntown.

I just read in a magazine today that drinking tea with citrus (lemon slice/peel,orange) cuts your chances of getting skin cancer by 70%...so everyone go out and have a cup of tea with lemon!
