Accommodation New Orleans LA
We are a couple of Aussies staying four nights in New Orleans
I've searched and searched for accommodation
We are 2/3 star travelers but I am having difficulty getting reasonable accommodation for four nights 29 April to 3rd May 2015
Obviously we want to be within walking distance to French Q
Help

My advice would be to look in the Garden District within walking distance of the St. Charles St. streetcar line.
The streetcar (cheap) takes you to Canal St. which is the west edge of the French Quarter.
There is also a streetcar line that runs north-south along Canal Street.

Thanks everyone I will look at CBD and Garden District
Of course the budget is always important We are three star travelers but three stars in New Orleans FQ is very expensive Not what we are use to paying
More than double We like $100-$130 per night
Why is New Orleans 50%-60% more??

There is an international literary festival in the Quarter and a Spring house tour festival in the Garden District. The following Sunday is Easter. That all together explains the demand.
Maybe you should go earlier for the Beer Festival on 21 March!
Whatever you do, New Orleans is not a place to stay in a marginal area. Everything described above is fine, but some places nearby are not.

You are traveling to New Orleans at a very popular time of year, so the rates are going to be high. If you go to the "New Orleans" forum on Trip Advisor, you can click on "Hotels" and "Budget" and see some of the hotels that fall in that category. Here are just a few "budget" NOLA hotels recommended by a major contributor to Trip Advisor:
Provincial, St. Marie, Place D Armes, Le Marais, Dauphine Orleans, Prince Conti and Chateau Bourbon. Wyndham Baronne also.
You might also try bidding for a room on Priceline. My SIL got a great deal last May in New Orleans by doing this.

We (two adults, two 10-yr-olds) stayed at the Place d'Armes in June. Our room had 2 Q beds, desk/chair, dresser, easy chair, tv, a/c, ceiling fan, nice bathroom with tub/shower. The room was pretty and very clean.
We were near the pool (for the kids) but they have another area overlooking a patio that probably would be quieter. The hotel is just a block from Jackson Sq. so has a perfect location. They served a small continental breakfast (sweet rolls and coffee) and parking was $28/nt. Our room rate was $99/nt. That is very inexpensive for such nice rooms and great location.

dondonandjj,
The dates you're planning for overlap with Jazz Fest, one of the largest and most popular music festivals in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Orl...itage_Festival).
The city is extremely crowded during that time, and hotels are much more expensive. While Jazz Fest is wonderful, consider going at different time (say pushing your trip back a week). Hotels will be much less expensive then.

We have reservations at Place d'Armes and are looking forward to being there in that great location! It will be our first time staying at that hotel and we paid a little more to have a window. They have some inside rooms with no windows. Just a heads up if that would be important to you.
