My husband and I will be celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary this year and would like to go to New York in either August, September, or October. Due to his job, it has to be after the second Sunday of any of those months. Questions:
1. Which of those three months would be the least expensive in regards to hotels/rooming?
2. We would like to stay somewhere close to the Rockefeller Center, if possible. Where do you recommend staying that is nice but not terribly expensive?
3. Are there any bed and breakfast locations you would recommend?
4. We would also like suggestions on "must see" places.

2. Why Rockefeller Center? What do you consider "not terribly expensive?"

4. There is no such thing. You might want to get a guidebook. I am sure you already know lots and lots of places in NYC. No sense in anyone listing things that are common knowledge.
August, September, October in that order.
NYC does not have a B & B tradition even though there are more and more.
There are few B&Bs in NYC - and those aren;t typically in midtown - which is where you seem to want to stay - but why by Rockefeller Center.
Agree that prices will be higher each month.
August will likely be very hot and humid and Oct will likely have the best weather - but much higher hotel prices.
Nice and not terribly expensive don't really go together in NYC (except possible in Jan). What is your exact budget in $ and what are you expecting for that? (Nice mean different things to different people.)
1) end of August has been very nice weather the last 5 or so years (look at historic temps on wunderground.com). The later in the month, the better. Any time before alabor day will be best. sept can be more expensive than Oct.
2) radiocityapartments.com is relatively inexpensive. The Jewel Facing Rockefeller Center is pretty nice. What do you call not terribly expensive?
3). I would ask why a b & b? If you think it's cheaper, it's not. If you're looking for something homier, there are also hotels that are homier like the Belleclaire and the Excelsior on the upper west side. If you like a smaller place, you might like

In regards to b&b, we have stayed at several in different states and have enjoyed them. Plans are to stay 4 or 5 nights. The radio city apts look interesting. Thanks for the info on all the lodging. I will check it out.
August may be cheaper but its hot, humid and thundershowers are not infrequent. The weather in September is much more pleasant, while October is cooler. Its still day light savings time for all 3 months.
Not Terribly expensive depends on your budget. NYC does not have much in the way of B and B's, and not in midtown Manhattan.
As for must sees, it depends on your interests. Take a look at a few tour books on NYC and get some ideas as to what your must sees are.
Radio City Apts is in a great location and is reliable - but is not luxurious. I doubt you will find anyplace less expensive where you will want to stay.
You might want to consider other areas - but unless we know what you want to do it's hard to make recos.
