Costa Rica. The beauty and diversity of the country, and the warm, polite, friendly, gracious Costa Ricans. Oh, yes and the weather and the fruit is wonderful, too!

Without a doubt the most fascinating country I've visited has been the Netherlands. I first went 30 years ago; most recently last year. In the interim the country has increased in size over 10%due to the creation of the province of Flevoland! Consider that over 80% of the country is "man-made" as the result of astute hydraulic engineering and astounding perserverance on the part of its stolid citizenry.

Of course the USA is the most fascinating country in my opinion. We have something for everybody. Apart from the US then my next favorite is Canada, expecially the BC Rockies and Montreal. Next would be Mexico as I lived there and speak Spanish. It has many things to see and do and the people are very warm and hospitable. Other than that, I have no desire to venture anywhere else. Have seen much of the world and far prefer California to any other place.

I LOVE Europe and have been to 75% of the western countries and several of the eastern countries. The USA is STILL my #1 choice of where to live. Nothing can match our freedom of speech, etc. However, I also love London, Paris, Prague, Salzburg, Brugges, Greece, Slovenia, and on and on. Almost every place I have visited is a place I could live.

As much as I enjoy Europe, Mexico, and the U.S., the most fascinating country I have visited is China. There is so much ancient history and many world famous sites to visit, good food, a bustling economy, a changing society that is really intesting to experience, not too many English speakers or tourists to detract from the ambience, and some of the friendliest people I have ever met.

Other fascinating countries I have visited include Japan, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, France, Mexico (the Mayan ruins in particular), and the mountain areas of Switzerland.

Each county has its own beauty and fascination. I like each for different reasons. Africa for wild adventure, Italy is romantic, Australia is friendly and has a vast amount to see and do and no problem with tourist getting in your way, Japan and China are ancient and historical, Germany is scenic and fun, South America has charm, history and beauty, Western Canada has Lakes,Glaciers and awesome beauty and is a bargain to visit now, France has Paris, lots of wine, great food and is unique and the USA has all of the above and has someplace, just about everything I have seen in other countries and it is still a great bargain. Europeans are really starting to discover America in large numbers. Maybe we should also. The developing third world countries such as Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic are also interesting and have a culture that for me was a great learning experience.

As a history buff, I find Germany most fascinating. The 20th century was shaped by events which happened there. The scenery, edifices, and people are most intriguing. Another is to visit and see the contrast: Czech Republic (Prague)and then to Hungary (Budapest)--from those who embraced capitalism to those who used the worst part of capitalism (until the last Hungarian election). Of course, US not included as is my home & I am biased pro.

What a question! May I include Turkey? It has been the crossroads of western civilization for thousands of years -- Hittite, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Ottoman -- and their legacies are all there for you to enjoy. Marvelous snow-capped peaks, fine beaches, vast plains. Great food. Wonderful buildings, palaces, fortresses, and monuments. But most of all, extremely friendly and helpful people.

My favorite is Italy. There is so much to see, Rome, Venice, Sienna, are all great places, plus the people are wonderful.
I also liked Norway and Sweden for the scenery.

Not my favorite country, but one of the most fascinating was Morocco--it's a curious blend of European and Arab--very nice people speak pidgin French, just like I do!! They are interested and accepting of Americans as no other Moslem countries are.
