Luggage suggestions?

My husband and I need to buy some new luggae for our family (we currently use various pieces we have had for more than 15 yrs - from before we were married). We have 2 kids - but they each have their own bag for smaller trips. We travel mostly by car but do fly once a year or so for a week or more vacation (this year Florida, nect year Bahamas or out west). We need some sort of suitbag and then the usual other pieces, both for the overhead and maybe a larger piece for when we travel by car.

We want a durable, quaility set, but priced within reason (i.e. we wouldn't buy a $500 piece). Last time I shopped (maybe 20 yrs ago) the mid range for qaulity was Samsonite. But now thre are so many choices.

Any suggestions would be appreciated?

Tumi is really nice, a bit on the expensive side but worth the money, IMHO. You can find good deals at TJ Maxx or Ross.

There is a new product on the market called Luggage Jacket. Its a wonderful sleeve that covers your existing luggage. There are a variety of styles they can be found on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/LuggageJacketLLC

I would highly suggest something in a brighter color (red, bright green, royal blue, etc) and NOT black. It seems like everyone has a black bag and it's a pain to find coming down the baggage carousel. A bright red bag sticks out. I would also suggest against anything larger than a 25-26" roller bag. Those giant 28-29" rollers are a complete pain and once they're half full you're at the weight limit.

A "suitbag" really depends on what kind of travel you do. If you have to dress up then that makes sense, but if you're just traveling for vacations then a normal roller is probably better.

A carryon size roller for each of you, a 25" roller for longer car trips (or checked on a plane) and a suit bag if truly necessary would cover all needs that I can think of.

I'm not big on brands for luggage. Just play with the zippers and wheels... do they feel sturdy or flimsy? I've had good luck with roller bags from Target (a 21" roller) and at Kohls (a 25" roller) and eBags (a carryon size backpack).

Agreeing with theh post above. Can you get somewhere to shop in person? To me it's not about a particular brand but carefully looking at the features of each suitcase. Check how the wheels and handle work. Do you like the configuration of the interior? Etc. Macy's always has suitcase 'sets' on decent sales, if you are needing to buy multiple pieces.

For car travel I don't bother with suitcases, rather use a baskets and tote bags system. Even laundry baskets. They fit so much easier and more flexibly in the trunk.

Have you tried searching online for the luggage you need?

Samsonite.com is having a terrific sale right now. I just ordered a great carryon spinner for a great price.
