HOW MUCH MONEY TO ESTIMATE FOR MEALS

My wife and I are going to Washington D.C. & Boston. How much should I estimate to spend on meals per day? Is $200 too low?
Thanks,
Craig

Welcome to Fodors . . . you will do better to re-post over on the United States forum tagged for Mass. and Wash. D.C. (See the 'change forum' pull down menu up top)

When you do re-post -- include info like what sorts of food you like, whether breakfasts are included w/ your hotels, whether that budget is also for wine/drinks . . .

Since everyone's eating habits are different it's difficult for strangers on a travel forum to know YOUR requirements so here's a "rule of thumb" that i've use to determine a budget for meals when I travel - it's served me well for over 20 years:

Estimate what you'd spend if you ate the same number of meals in similar type restaurants where you live. Add 30% to that number. The result will be a very workable "meal budget" for your trip and you'll probably have a little cash left over.

I would say even having a fairly nice dinner out each day you can easily stay under $100 per person per day. It really depends on your eating habits. You of course could spend $200 on dinner alone if you have very expensive taste and habits. However, I would say you can eat well for less than that. If you'd like any Boston restaurant suggestions let me know what type of food, etc.
