We liked the Araras lodge in the north and Caiman Ecological Refuge in the south. Both had some advantages over the other, but both were great.

Here is a link to a family self-drive in the northern Pantanal, http://safaritalk.net/topic/11248-pantanal-august-2013/

I think it is possible to do a self-drive, however if you want to see jaguar out of Porto Jofre you need a guy with a boat. The least expensive option closest to Porto Jofre is the Jaguar Ecolodge where the owner runs his own tours from the lodge to the Porto Jofre area. I have stayed at both Pousada Piuval and Rio Clara twice now and enjoyed both places very much. I know that Araras is amongst the more expensive lodges as is Pousada Alegre which I'm told is more expensive that Piuval and Rio Clara although the food and acommodation are nowhere near as good as at the other two.

My trip report from last year is here, http://safaritalk.net/topic/11322-ma...and-polynesia/ This was a guided safari as was this one, http://safaritalk.net/topic/11651-br...eptember-2013/

Whilst neither of these was a self-drive, you may find the lodging and wildlife viewing details of interest.

Happy planning,

Pol
