I'm not going to address the wife-hunting query. For people who are looking to retire in SA, the hot new destination that I'm seeing a lot written about is Cuenca, Ecuador. Third largest city in the country. Lots of colonial atmosphere in the city center. Much more manageable (and safer) than Quito or Guayaquil. Moderate climate. About 8,000 feet above sea level, so have to be able to deal with that altitude. It's a lot lower than Quito though. Growing expat community.

I am seriously looking at Ecuador partly because of the country itself but also because of the ease of acquiring a visa, purchasing property etc. Cuenca looks to have a good balance of what I am looking for and I am planning on an exploratory visit early next year.
I am however, planning on taking my wife with me - I find it less expensive that way!
