Lake Tahoe Trip in July

Hi everyone!

I am planning a trip to Lake Tahoe in July (from the 11-17). I was just there this past weekend for the first time and fell in love with it and wanted to return for my bachelorette party.

After doing some research (discovering it was on the “no” list for 2023) and hearing about the gnarly traffic conditions, I am having second thoughts.

Currently, I am debating between staying in Homewood or Zephyr Cove. Homewood is a little further away, so might not be as congested, but I’m a little concerned there won’t be as much to do there whereas Zephyr Cove is near South Lake, so closer to the “action.”

I’m curious if anyone has any opinions to share! Just how bad are the traffic conditions in July? If you were me, would you stay in Homewood or Zephyr Cove OR would you scrap the idea all together?

To give you an idea, we’re 9 gals total in our mid-30s looking to do a boat day on the lake, a night out (nothing too crazy) and maybe a few casual meals and sitting on the beach.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Fodors. I have no idea what you mean by " (discovering it was on the “no” list for 2023) "

I also 'Homewood is a little farther away'. Farther away from what - South shore specifically? You know, there are activities around the entire lake - unless you just mean the casino hotels at Stateline. You could stay at Zephyr Cove, or Homewood, or Tahoe City, or Incline or any of a number of other areas. South Shore is the most built up and has by far the most traffic and is also he least scenic. If it was me -- unless you mainly want to spend hours in Harrah's/Harveys/Ballys I'd stay at the north end -- like Incline Village. You can get to water sports, beaches, cruises, casinos, restaurants, and bars from anywhere.

If you are mostly into the big casinos -- then stay in Stateline or Zephyr Cove. But for me - in July I'd want to be as far away from Stateline as possible. You are missing the July 4th madness, but yes, it will be busy.

My daughter, her husband and friends like to stay in the Zephyr Cove area. They are in their early 30s. They like being closer to the action for the evening, restaurants, but beaches are hand as well as water sports. Homewood is nice if you want to kickback more. It’s close to Chambers Landing, Sunnyside, and my favorite restaurant Westshore Cafe. It can be congested in Tahoe City on your way to Homewood. My husband and I prefer the North Shore at Incline.

MichelleY has pretty much covered the bases.

But oops - noticed a missing bit in my earlier post: Should have said something like "I'm also not sure about 'Homewood is a little farther away'. Farther away from what - South shore specifically? "

Homewood may offer you a more relaxed and less crowded atmosphere, which may be ideal for a secluded getaway in nature. However, if you want to be closer to the "action" and enjoy a variety of activities on South Lake, then Zephyr Cove may be a better option.

I second Sunnyside Lodge as a nice spot to relax. Right on the water, great patio overlooking the lake for food and drink and more good restaurants close by like West Shore Cafe and places in Truckee. Traffic does get congested-that’s why I’d find a place to stay put mainly and enjoy.
