Hi,
We just returned on the 10th. We visited Yalku lagoon last year Xel-Ha this trip. Both places are good but very different. Xel-ha costs about 28usd pp. There are lots of tourists (of course)but it is a huge place so it wasn't that bad. There are good facilities, restaurants, plenty of chairs in the shade etc. We wanted the calm lagoon with lot's of fish for our son's first snorkeling experience. We saw many large fish and two rays,so we were happy.
Yalku lagoon is VERY low-key/un-touristy. It is probably a mile or so from the main part of Akumal (too far to walk). You pay 5usd pp. There are toilets and outdoor showers but no other facilities (take your bottled water). There were NO crowds and the snorkeling is good. We ate lunch at Lol-ha beach restaurant (center of Akumal)and enjoyed a very nice afternoon. I hope this helps.

We just came back from Mexico and it seems (from previous answer) that yalku is nice, but we haven't been there. The only tip I have is to spend the whole day in Xel-Ha especially if you have kids. There are many things to do there besides snorkeling (the lazy river for example). The place was crowded but it's big and the service is very warm and friendly.

I would definately recommend Yal-ku lagoon. Xelha is VERY touristy, it is pretty much like an amusement park. Its crowded, expensive and cheesy. Yal-ku lagoon is gorgeous! We saw so many beautiful fish and even some sea turtles.
