Wine Availability in Costa Rica
Is decent red wine readily available throughout Costa Rico, such as at Arenal hotels and on the Osa Peninsula? Are the Chilean and Argentine reds reasonably priced, like under $20 a bottle? Or should we bring our own supply? The "Black Box" wine travels well and is palatable for boxed wine. I'd be worried about glass bottle breakage in my suitcase. Any thoughts?

There are a few decent Chilean Malbecs, Merlots, Cabs, and even an occasional Pinot for $12-20. The Argentines tend to be harder to find and more expensive, but they are around.
The big supermarkets have better selections, less corked wine (sitting around upright in the tropics in an un-air-conditioned liquor store with sun coming in the open storefront kills them fast) and lower prices than the liquor stores.
Of course just like anywhere else double the price if you're ordering it in a restaurant.

You will find an okay selection at the BM Market in Puerto Jimenez. They will have wine from Chile, including many of the lower priced bottles from Concha y Toro like Casillero del Diable, Trio, Sunrise and Frontera. There is also a popular boxed wine on the shelves. Bottles range from $10 - $25. The box wine is around $5.

Additionally, you will find a selection of wines available for purchase at the duty free shops (a few at the arrivals/departure level and one at baggage claim) at SJO. Good prices! Lisa in Playa Hermosa

The best place to stock up on wines is in the duty free shop by the baggage claim that Latitude9Lisa talks about. There are wines there that we can't even get at home and it's fun to shop. Prices are great. For the cheapest good wines outside of the duty free shop, you can't go wrong with any of the Chilean or Argintinean wines in the grocery stores.
