You are right. I would assume that it is true because:

1. Mexico has alot of direct flights from the US and elsewhere.

2. Mexico is highly marketed here in the US as a vacation destination.

3. The US has alot of $ invested in Mexico

4. It is a beautiful country (among many, many others in Latin America as well).

5. Its relatively close to the US. (Obviously, since it shares a border)

6. The Mexico Tourism Authority develops alot of "packages" for tourists through big US travel agents chains.

7. There are alot of tourist destinations in Mexico, where Americans can feel comfortable. (Ex: Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, etc.)

8. Easy to travel in, no passports required.

I think thats enough, but I do agree that there are so many places in the world to see. My goal (fantasy) is to see everything atleast once, anybody got a spare million or 2?!

Although I've also been to Belize (once), Costa Rica (twice) and Venezuela (once), we keep going back to Mexico. It's a large country which offers incredible variety and the culture is fascinating. I don't live in the States - I'm Canadian - and I like to go south in the winter. When we get only a week or 2 in the winter, we opt for something that's easy to get to and fast. I can get direct flights to Mexico from Toronto (where I live) and be there in a few hours. We don't always go to the same places in Mexico - we like to travel around and we feel it's a different vacation every time.

On the other hand, there are many other countries I would love to visit. I want to spend some time in Guatemala, as well as many of the South American countries. Now if I could just convince my employer to give us more vacation time, I could probably manage it!

Interesting topic, Santiago - I know I'm always thinking of where to go next and you've started me thinking!

Dennis, I don't really get your point - are you trying to be sarcastic? If you read the notes, no one has said they don't like Mexico. I, for one, love Mexico - it's an incredible country. But I also want to visit other countries. I am reading the European forum a lot these days - I'm going to Greece and Turkey next month and I'm really excited about that trip. At the same time, I'm also thinking about our trip to Mexico in 2001 - probably Patzcuaro and Morelia, maybe a few days in Mexico City, and then a beach somewhere. But Santiago is right - most of this forum deals with Mexico - since it's Latin America, I would expect to see more than just Mexican beach resorts. Just an observation, not a criticism!

For me, Mexico is what Florida was (and still is) for my parents: a "warm place in the sun" that is easy to get to and a familiar place to relax. Sometimes I "travel" and sometimes I "go on vacation". The first few trips to Mexico were travel, after that, vacation. If I can manage two vacations and one travel per year, I consider myself very fortunate. Living in NY, I can get cheap, nonstop tickets to Cancun year round, with am departures that put me on the beach in Playa del Carmen by noon. And I enjoy myself there. That is why I go there.

Today I entered this forum for the first time ...... and in the beginning I tought it was a mexico-forum. I have never been to mexico and really want to go there one day ..... but it looks like some of you are only interested in Mexico ..... . For me it is very important to visit as much countries as possible and not to stick with one country. for me traveling is learning about other cultures, ways of living , meeting people ... and this is not possible when I stick to one country .

Actually to be geographically correct Mexico isn't a part of Latin or South America. It is part of North America. I for one, go there twice a year because the country is a cornucopia of adventure travel options. Jungles, beaches, mountains, deserts, Mayan ruins, or skyscapers. It has it all. I live there part time also at: www.choice1.com/villamontana.htm

adios!

[email protected]

Actually, Dan, I didn't realize there was a geographical entity called "Latin America". I realize there is North America, Central America and South America, and that Mexico is part of North America (hence NAFTA). Perhaps Latin America is more of a cultural designation and encompasses Mexico, Central America and South America. Most of the countries are Spanish or Portuguese speaking. (If I were to use language only, it could also include parts of the US like Miami!) So I guess Latin America (in Fodor's map of the world) includes those countries of the Americas south of the US?

Why the knock on Canadians as whiners? Canadians aren't whiners, it's that we are caring people that respect other cultures, and when we travel to foreign lands we want to make sure that we get what is promised to us, and along with a good time, want to leave a positive impression of our homeland as a place where we are caring people. Not to generalize, but in my travels througout the world, American's aren't really that respected because of attitude towards other cultures and customs. You put a Maple Leaf on you suitcase and guaranteed that you will be looked after better then someone with the stars and stripes.

James:

I am not an American but am Mexican and live in Mexico. Put as many maple leafs as you want on your suitcase. However, it won't get you anything in Mexico. To us, the Canadians and Americans are pretty well the same except the Canadians complain a lot more and are genrally very cheap. I hate to generalize because there are many nice Canadians that visit but it is still true.

I am a Canadian and have visited Mexico many times. Why do you consider the advantage of us warning you all about possible problems in Mexico as whining?? I had great problems the last time I was in Mexico and have been determined to save anyone else from having the same misfortune. I don't consider it whining but helping others enjoy their hard worked for and extremely expensive vacations. That is what this forum is for isn't it? To advise others about misfortunes they may have encountered and on the other hand, the good times they have had. I find it very degrading for you to paint all canadians as "whiners" because we use this forum to inform others about accomodation that is highly overrated or perhaps an outright rip off. Maybe the next time you go to Mexico and ask for assistance, someone should recommend one of the places where we have been ripped off royally and let's see if you "whine".
