Ted, it depends where you will be staying. When we were in Osa Peninsula all we needed were shorts, t-shirts and bathing suit. Then in Monteverde we needed rain gear and sweaters, but in the mountains (7,200 feet elevation) we were glad we brought more warm clothes and hiking boots. Where are you going to spend your time when in Costa Rica?

For where you are going, a tunic would be best for both letting the air circulate around your body and keeping the bugs away.

All you will need are shorts and T-shirts. Unless the resort you are staying in has a dress code for the evening (I doubt it), all you need are casual clothes for hot and dry weather. If you plan to take any tours that involve going into rain forest, canopy tour etc, you will need sneakers with good traction and maybe lightweight long pants. Don't forget to take sunblock, bug spray and a flashlight with you.
