Wedding in Cancun

We are considering a samll wedding in Cancun in Jan-Feb 2003. I am looking for feedback as to what Cancun is like. I am afraid it is a large busy city with high rises and traffic. We are also considering St. Lucia (we have never been there either). If anyone can tell us what to expect at either location, that would be great.

I think Cancun is very urban. Its like going to downtown Chicago. I got married in Sandals Negril Jamaica, and can't say enough about it. The resort will plan every aspect of your wedding. They were super.

Also interested in wedding ideas and because of flight restrictions(will probably use a charter airline from Milwaukee) we must consider a limited number of destinations. Cancun (or areas close) , PV, or Jamica. Anyone heard of or experienced pretty weddings at any of these sights? St. Lucia is just too expensive! Trying to make it somewhat affordable for us and convenient for guests. Thanks.

Hi Geoff,
My brother is getting married in Playa Del Carmen which is about 3 hours from Cancun on January 10th. My boyfriend and I will be going. It will be at (in my opinion), the best hotel in Mexico called the Barcelo Maya. I have been to Cancun twice and to Playa Del Carmen twice. All I can say is that I would pick Playa Del Carmen over Cancun hands down. I found Cancun to be too much "in your face". Playa Del Carmen is located near many of the ruins/great historical sites and is nearby a lovely village with great restaurants and shops lining a nice beach. My boyfriend and I are not "stay in the hotel" types; so we have gone on many excursions. The best excursions are located very close to Chichiniza & Xtapa (sorry if these are spelled wrong). We went last year on two great excursions; one is called the Z-line tour where you ride horses up to a pool of water with an amazing waterfall and cliffs, hike up a cliff, cross a man made swinging bridge to another cliff, get harnassed in and are cabled accross to the other cliff. It is awesome. Another tour was called the Cenote tour where you take a Jetski accross a wide river and end up at a cenote site where you can snorkle in somewhat shallow water for approx. an hour. Then they take you to other cenote's (sink holes); one of which is literally a hole in the ground that you enter via a rope ladder down about 30 feet to a fresh water cave (if you dive, you can go under the cave and re-surface in another hole). It was truly amazing. This time, I plan to parachute out of an airplane (my boyfriend says I am nuts but you only live once and I am determined to knock a few things off my list of "the 100 things I want to do before I die"). Whatever you do, have fun, good luck and have a very happy New Year!

The Superclubs, Couples and Sandals Resorts in Jamaica give Free Weddings and do a beautiful job. I have seen the wedding pictures of some of my clients who got married in these Resorts and they were beautiful.
On a 7night Stay El Dorado Resorts in Mexico (Mayan Sun Coast) give free Weddings. Other resorts such as Palace, Iberostar, Barcelo and etc has nominal charges or $750-2000 for Weddings.
Since Mexico is usually cheaper than Jamaica, you may not mind paying for the wedding.
I would choose a good Travel Agent. Ask if they have planned Weddings Before, if they have inspected the Resorts in Mexico or Jamaica. Choose an Agent with experience who specializes in this type of Wedding and Resort. Give them your budget and what activities you are looking for and they will help you choose the perfect Resort for you budget and taste.

as you enter cancun, it goes on for miles & miles with highrise hotels. looking to experience mexico? not here, all i saw was pizza huts, mcdonald's etc. the beaches are very nice - hotels are very expensive. further down is "downtown" cancun which is very busy, has some good restaurant (yes - mexican restaurants) and is not that pretty. i hear further south - playa or telum - are more laid back.

Just to give you an idea: I'm planning a wedding for my best friend (my husband is from Cancun so she asked me to help plan it).

45 people. Fiesta Americana Coral Beach in the Hotel Zone in Cancun. The hotel will give a discount rate for even a small group. The ceremony will be on the beach at the hotel around 6:30pm. The reception to follow at the outdoors restaurant is about $50/person, bar is still being negociated, cake is still in the works.

They have very capable people to work with. There is a site that does all the wedding planning in Cancun for you. Here is the site:

http://www.caribbean-cancunwedding.com/

You need to ask yourself if you want it in Cancun--with large hotels on beautiful beaches, or a more bohemian approach, then you might want to look further south.

di
