Tipping on the Inca Trail
My husband and I will be hiking the Inca Trail in late April and need some advice regarding appropriate amounts for tipping porters, camp cooks, etc.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Thanks very much. I checked out the website but the suggested tip amounts seem awfully low. I also received the Explorandes website and they provide some suggestions for tips yet their amounts seem somewhat high. If anyone else has some advice, I'd be most grateful.

We had the same question when we hiked the Inca Trail- we ended up asking our "extra" guide.
He said we should have 4 tips- the guide and assistant guide, the cook, the porters, and the 'coordinator'.
Our whole group pooled our tips and we split them up into the 4 groups. The cook and the coordinator got the same amount. We only had 1 guide to tip(long story), but guide got 2x the cook/coord amount. And we gave the group of porters was about the same as all the others combined.
I don't remember the exact amounts, but from the group I think the cook/coord got around 40USD each the guides got around 100USD (for guide/asst guide), and the porters ended up with about 50 Soles apiece.
Our group tipped with a mixture of soles and USD. For the guides and coordinator, USD were ok. But, for the porters tip in soles since they may not have easy access to exchanging USD.
