Spanish Dictionary

I am going to Guatamela in Jan. 08 and will be attending a Spanish school. I was wondering which dictionary to take with me. There are so many to choose from. Any recommendations?

Also, for those of you that have gone to school in Guatemala, are things that you wished you would have taken with you had you known, and if so, what would they be?

Thanks!
Debbie

Here's a link to my personal favorite dictionary (and I have half a dozen; the link is long so you might have to cut and paste):

http://www.amazon.com/Langenscheidt-...289&sr=1-1

I like how it's organized and it's very small and durable.

I take vocab lists and games to help me practice verb conjugations in the evenings. I also take photos of my town and family and small gifts for teachers and host families; items that represent your area including postcards and calendars work well. Here's a link to the FAQ thread of the Thorntree Forum; my packing list is #15:

Also, my travelogues and photos are here if you're interested:

Happy trails!

Debbie:

My favorite is the Langenscheidt also. I probably have 10 different dictionaries (I know, it's overkill). I like the 3"x4" Langenscheidt because it fits in my pants pocket or shirtpocket or small pocket in my backpack. Very durable. I probably have 6 of the same one. I carry one in the car, one in my desk at my office, one in my backpack and then just stuffed around the house where I might be studying.

At my computer desk at home I keep the 4" x 6" langenscheidt for easy reference but with a little larger type.

A suggestion: I like to take 3-4 of these little pocket dictionaries on my trips so if I meet someone that is really working hard to try to learn English and may not have the money to purchase I dictionary then I will give them one of mine. It is amazing how much they value the small gift. The little boy that cleaned my tennis shoes everyday in the park in Nicaragua was trying to learn English. He had a few words written down on a piece of paper. On my last day there I gave him a dictionary to carry around in his shoe shine box. I'm sure he still has it.
