On our last visit earlier this year we found a terrific indoor/outdoor mall right on the lagoon named Plaza la Isla. Two big indoor malls - Caracol and ? had lots of empty stores and very few customers.

TONS of shopping downtown. Big touristy city with lots of shops

Shopping for what?<BR><BR>In the hotel zone you'll find 4 big shopping centers:<BR><BR>1. La Isla, the newest and IMHO, the best. Clothing, jewelery, perfumes, sunglasses, several good restaurants, movie theaters, the works.<BR><BR>2. Plaza Kukulcan, that should be the largest. Cheaper stuff than La Isla. Also has cinemas and restuaurants.<BR><BR>3. Plaza Flamingo. Have seen it from the outside. Looks like (pricewise) it is somewhere in between Kukulcan and La Isla.<BR><BR>4. Plaza Caracol. A rather schizophrenic place. You'll find the best jeweleries, and also cheap and tacky souvenirs.<BR><BR>There are a couple of others that are maybe not worth mentioning.

you probably want to avoid the flea market if you 're not into bargaining. the prices there are extremely high and ridiculous. you can just go into a supermarket/dept store and buy your gifts there. no hasseling, no bargaining and the prices are reasonable. stick w/i the hotel zone, on't go downtown, there's nothing there
