We checked out Hotel El Faro when we were in Playa in January and really liked the look of it. It is right in town (by the lighthouse!), on the beach and the rooms ranged from $80 to $200 or so. I know that they have a website that you could have a look at.

We have stayed twice at Las Palapas, just a twenty minute walk south along the water from Playa del Carmen. We enjoy this all inclusive resort better than staying in a hotel in the town. It's a five minute cab ride into town, so it's the best of both worlds. You can find it at : http://www.innsnorthamerica.com/Mexi...laspalapas.htm

We stayed at Hotel La Tortuga last november, and it is a really nice, brand new and very neat hotel that we can recommend.

http://www.hotellatortuga.com/

Good location with nice walking distance from the beach, the shopping street as well as the supermarket.

I can't really see why you would want to fly to Mexico and then stay in a resort, but that's another topic...
The Riu Yucatan is on a great stretch of beach about 20 mins. walk out of the village. It's all inclusive, bedrooms are large and have TV. Optics are provided in the room, with four spirits, and a fridge with soft drinks and beer, all refilled daily as required. The staff are really friendly and helpfull.
I second the first response. I was in Playa in September and stayed at the Hotel El Faro. Nice rooms, though mine was w/o a TV. Right on the beach and a nice pool as well. Right in town and just far enough off the beaten track to be peaceful. While you're there, check out teh restaurant Yaxche for authentic Mayan cuisine. Ask for the special Maragrita

Hey "Big John", we were at El Faro in September too! Were you there for the hurricane? (We were there at the end of Sept. and early October)
