PDC Blue Parrot shooting
Anyone have any insight? I've been to the BP. It was kind of blackballed at one point by the locals (don't recall why). Apparently the shooting was during an electronic music festival. I hope drug killings have come to PDC.

This kind of thing isn't unheard of when you have a huge festival with tons of young people drinking and partying. I'm surprised you haven't heard of that festival before, it's huge and has been going on a long time at PDC, I wouldn't go anywhere near it myself.

Well, so much for the hope that narcos won't be gunning people down PDC and Cancun. Welcome to the rest of Mexico.

That's not why it happened. According to the articles I read yesterday, it was a targeted drug related event.

Kind of seems a little weird to suggest we shouldn't be surprised that a festival gets shot up.

Happens all over Mexico. This sounds like a drug related event according to all the reports we were give (except this is extra sad because there were casualties that were totally innocent). Much like the even in Puerto Vallarta where they had a drug related incident at a restaurant called La Leche No innocent were hurt there, but no one city is immune to this cartel violence.

The word on the street here in Playa (where we own and are right now, and have many friends who are long term residents of the town and who own and are involved in local businesses) is that this was related to one of the BPM promoters not paying protection money. And possibly not allowing a certain faction to sell drugs inside the club where the shooting happened and where the 10 days of the BPM festival was ending that early morning.
I hope, as do all the residents and many of the business owners whom I have talked to here, that this incident puts an end forever to the BPM festival. This 10 day electronic dance festival is overwhelming to the town, and brings in a lot of drugs and ensuing drug use and behavior, as electronic dance events seem to do. As owners, we do not rent our condos at all during the time of the BPM festival.
We have owned two properties in Playa del Carmen for years. Other than this recent occurence, I do not ever recall any violence in the town that ended up with deaths of tourists or those not living here (except one domestic dispute where an Italian man murdered his girlfriend, but that is different). Hopefully if the BPM festival is shut down, this will not happen again.

' Most of Mexico isn't infiltrated by the cartel.'
Are you really that naive? ALL of Mexico is infiltrated by the cartels. Just because they're not gunning people down at dance festivals or on the beach at Acapulco, doesn't mean they've not infiltrated every level of government and society. The cartels run Mexico.

We too are condo owners in the Playa area (puerto aventuras) and have heard the exact same thing in regards to what emd3 has mentioned. Many businesses are fed up with this BPM (beets per minute) yearly concert that literally overtakes all the beaches and many areas of the city. We have learned to steer clear from these happenings, especially at night with all the loud young revellers who defecate and vomit all over the place.
Yes, it is common knowledge that the two organizers refused to pay protection money and were therefore made to regret their decision.
Let's hope that this unfortunate event, (which is an exception and not the rule) here in the Yucatan is a thing of the past.
