needed supplies in Honduras
I will be in Roatan next week, & I would like to bring some needed supplies there to donate. Should I bring OTC meds, school supplies, etc? Any suggestions? And to whom should I give them, is there a central agency on the island? I want to be sure they get to the right people.

There is a hospital (http://roatanhospital.com/) that could use some assistance. There are a couple of other children assistance groups as well that I will pull out for you. Always needed are school supplies, etc. I will get you more information and a couple of contacts. Thank you for the generous thoughts.

Thank you for linking http://roatanhospital.com quest42n8 we are getting ready for The Roatan Hospital Benefit Concert on Thursday, August 26, 2010. When people check out the website they can see the needs are many. Once the Concert is over I will be posting pictures of the huge difference contributions can make. I will also be adding an on-going wish list of items for people to consider bringing when they come visit beautiful Roatan. I know it is hard to believe but even simple things like surgical gauze and tape to dress injuries are greatly welcomed.
When you arrive on Roatan, if you have donations for the hospital, just go to Coxen Hole and ask for directions to Hospital Roatan (small town, easy to get to.) Take the donations in and any staff member will gratefully receive what you bring.
The Roatan Hospital (English translation) is the only public hospital on Roatan and is open for all people of Roatan and visitors. If anyone needs emergency medical care while on Roatan they will be treated. I know of many visitors they have cared for (including broken bones and serious trauma) and the bill has been less than $20 US. And while the physical condition of the hospital is horrific and supplies are always running low. The care people receive from the dedicated professional health care givers is second to none. http://roatanvortex.com/2010/04/06/c...than-medicine/

roatanvortex - you are welcome. We will be coming in again for several weeks in October. we come in 3 to 4 stays a year. My wife is a nurse at a hospital in the staes and normally volunteers on island. She has spoken with her hospital to get some supplies donated as well. so we would appreciate the list of specific needs. I will keep checking your and the roatan hospital site for this information.
lojoblais maybe you will be down for the concert as well!

Dear vortex: Thanks for your response. As I will be on the island on the 26th -- what kind of concert is it & where & when?
Also-- I know there are small clinics there that are in desperate need of supplies. Would it be better to bring them there, or is the hospital more reliable?

Thank you, thank you! The concert coming up has us running to make sure it is a successful event. The proceeds from this concert will be going to specific improvements and beyond that there are many more on-going needs. I look forward to keeping you and everyone updated. And perhaps meeting you on your next trip to Roatan.
lojoblais you probably will be on Roatan for the concert. Come on out to the Port of Roatan (Coxen Hole cruise ship dock)Thursday August 26 5PM, for L250 ($13.00) at the gate admission you will be treated to a world class concert, various dining options, and local artisans displaying and selling their wares.

Vortex: what time is the concert? We're staying at the Infinity, so I don't think that's too far away.
Qwovadis: can you tell me a specific clinic on the island that I can donate to?
Thanks to you both!

Pictures from the Roatan Hospital Concert are now up at http://roatanhospital.com
Now that that is over I will have some time to post a list of items most needed by the hospital and I will update it regularly. As well as I will be posting where the funds raised will be going specifically so everyone can see the difference their generous support and contributions are making.

Just returned from Roatan. Loved it! Went to the concert & had a great time. Also visited Miss Peggy's clinic & the colonia area, which I must say really got to me. Those people are so poor, & yet so gentle & friendly, especially the children. Actually seriously considering going back w/ my husband to volunteer.
