More requests for my upcoming move to Panama

Calling plan - AT&T wants to charge me a $5 monthly fee and $1.90 per minute for cell to cell call...any suggestions on another provider?

Most reliable cable/satellite service

Where can I watch NFL games

thanks to one and all - K

I think it will be cheaper to buy a cell phone there and/or use phone cards. My son lived in Panama as a community service worker in 04-05 and cards worked best for him.

Set up something when you get there. Claro and Movil are the two cell operators in Panama.

My North American service provider suggested I buy a phone there. Buying cards (time) is easy at any shopping mall or convenience store and inexpensive. I lived in Panama and visit frequently and used Movistar with no problems throughout the country.

NFL games - Bennigans on Avenida Balboa caters to sports lovers - very loud but fun!

Don't do roaming - it will bankrupt you. Lots of places to buy pre-paid phones - $10-$20 get's you a phone and first bit of airtime - there are now 4 operators:
www.cwmovil.com
www.movistar.com
www.claro.com.pa
www.digicelpanama.com

Not much to choose between them for prepaid - they all have deals - it's better to have all family on one provider as they do special rates within their own coverage - otherwise it doesn't really matter.
Most of them have triple or quadruple days where you get more bang for your buck....

Cheers,
Andrew

NFL games: all the casinos have the games on, Sportsbook - near the Marriott has good coverage... the local cable TV company (Cable Onda) carries a lot of games via ESPN, ABC etc.

Andrew

This is why I love Fodors Forum! Will I be able to purchase a phone at the airport as soon as exiting customs? What kind of cost am I looking at?

No, you should wait until getting into town you will have a much better choice and prices than at the airport.

Prices depend on whether you are buying a prepaid account or a post paid plan - obviously with the post paid plan you are tying your self in for a minimum of 12 months and therefore they will give you a better deal on the phone - you can get from free to $500+ depending on what plan and what phone.

On prepaid you can get one for as little as $10 or $20 on up.

Cheers,
Andrew
