Moon Palace is it a mistake!???

Just booked a trip for family to moon palace. Our kids are 18 and 14 and we are going the first week in April 2002. Now I found this wonderful forum. Did we make the right move? Our first choice was Ibirostar at Parasio Beach but it was booked.

Good:

Lots of Restaurants, nice pool, and activities.

Bad:

The beach is full of seaweed and no one swims in it. Bad location, It's a drive to any nearby city.

Better yet:
Book at the new Palace Resort Xpu-Ha Palace. I beleive it's around the same price as the Moon. Much better location even though its further down the coast. Has a beautiful beach, unique rooms, snorkeling area, kayaking area, animals (deer, crocs, monkeys).....Much more activities for kids! Try to book through a member for the best rates.

The Moon Palace is a fine, up-scale all-inclusive property. I have never seen a word on any problems with seaweed or "no one swims in it". In fact, any time a tropical storm swings by the Yucatan, there is a possibility of seaweed in the water. The prior posting must have experienced just such an event. It is true that the property is a little remote. But, if my memory serves me well, the Moon Palace provides multiple-service via bus between Playa Del Carmen and the hotel. It is absolutely worth it to "blow a little extra" and eat in PDC one night. We have had great food at Yaxche (best Pina Colada in town and surprising nuvo quisine), The Blue Parrot (best lobster in town) and La Parilla (try the black pasta with shrimp, flamed tableside). Bring your bathing suits everywhere you go. The water is so inviting that you don't want to pass on the urge. Without question the Xpu-Ha Palace is a great property -- but, you are already booked at the Moon Palace and I am certain you and your family did not make a mistake.

Tim: Correction -- best lobster is at the Blue Lobster, not the Blue Parrot. The Blue Parrot is one of the oldest hotels in PDC (I think it was built in the mid-80's), and definately worth an after diner trip with your teenagers. They often have a rock band after 9:30 PM, and the bar has a sand floor with swings instead of stools. This is a "straight from the bottle" kind of place -- don't bother with any mixed drinks, go for the cervesa. It is a blend of one part Jimi Hendrix and one part Earnest Hemmingway -- funky chique.

We stayed last yr. with our 17 yr. old twins. We absolutely loved it!! There was seaweed collecting on the beach at the beginning of our trip, but they had machines picking it up regularly. It wasn't a problem for us. The resort is fabulous with so many restaurants and lots of entertainment. Very relaxing with the jacuzzi in the room, too.

Stay away from Moon Palace!!!!!! Stay in either Cancun or better still in Playa. Cabs will cost you at least $14 each way into Cancun and probably more to Playa from Moon Palace. Beach sucks in comparison to Cancun and Playa. Brown with seaweed- we never saw anyone removing the stuff. Pool is nice though. Food is only okay- mostly buffets. Try Porto Real for an all inclusive in Playa. In cancun, you really don't need all inclusive. Call your travel agent to see if she has heard about the Royal Carribean or Royal Mayan ets - these are condominiums with private beaches smack dab on the hotel zone in cancun- they are all ocean view suites, with balconies and kitchens, and they give you a room charge card for food etc.. Have a great time.

We just came back from the Moon Palace. The rooms are beautiful, ground immaculate. There is a little sea weed in certain sections of the beach. We stayed towards the pool area. There are two sections to the Moon, Sunrise and Punta, we stayed inbetween the two. By all means go to the Sunrise for the pool and food. The pool area is lit at night and the food much better. The Punta side has buffets, only 1 sit down restaurant for dinner. Other than that, its buffet style. There are more activities going on in the Sunrise section, they cut back over 50% in their work force and the night club was closed in the Punta side. It's about a 20 minute ride into Cancun itself, $16 for a taxi for 4 people or they have a shuttle but it doesn't start until noon and returns periodically but has to be picked up from the Beach Palace. Good luck. We had rain and clouds the week we were there.

The Moon Palace is a GREAT choice we go every year and just love it, they have the best pools you will find anywhere, the staff goes so out of thier way to please you it is great, as for the distance between Cancun and the Moon it is a QUICK 20 minutes each way, I don't know why people are taking cabs and complaining about the price, just take the free shuttle! If you want to go to clubs at night they have a great bar hopping tour where you also get free transportation! We stay for 2 weeks when we go and never once had to use a cab.
We've stayed at Moon Palace twice and LOVED it. You can get free transportation to ALL the many other Palace resorts in Cancuun from the Moon Palance, so if you want to try other beaches you can. BUT, the best pool in all of Cancuun is at the Sunrise section of Moon Palace. Have fun!

when we were there about three months ago virtually no one went into the ocean because you would come out dripping seaweed. the previous writer who said it only happens after a storm doesn't know what he's talking about.

we stayed at the moon palace in september and had a great time. this is our 3rd all inclusive and it is up there with sandals. the food was fair but the resort is nice. cancun is like miami or any big coastal city and you may only go there once or twice. the beach in cancun is nicer but i usually lay out by the pool anyway. and with the free trips moon offers you can't go wrong for the price. sandals cost us almost twice as much. go to ixcaret with your family. this trip is well worth the extra money. you will have a great time.
