Monteverde or Savegre in CR

Go to Monteverde or Savegre is the question?
Our present plan was to spend 1 night in SJ, 2 nights in Coco, 3 nights in Arenal, 3 nights in Monte, one night in Poas, and then 5 nights in BdC, last in SJ
Should we eliminate Monte and use those days after going to Poas and spend them in Savegre?

I have to thank Shillmac, Susie2 and several others for painting such a great picture of the area.
Our plans were to see Monteverde but after reading different reports/comments on Savegre we are considering whether to eliminate Mont and go to Savegre instead.
We arent birders but i really have NO doubts I could become one real quick(not real sure about my wife?..haha). But we are both avid hikers and sounds as if there is some good hiking there also.
There are several reasons I would like to change plans. The area sounds so much better and am truly intrigue with seeing the quetzal. And Marino sounds like a truly awesome guide and if my wife can be converted, sounds as if he is the person for the job.
If we go to Savegre instead, would there be enough to do for 3 days? I was thinking of spending 2 days at Savegre and possibly one day at somewhere like Finca de Quetzales.
Does anyone have a good recommendation for a small friendly Tico B & B or equivelent who speaks fluent English. Does Eddie Serrano farm fill this bill?
Maybe even more intigueing is Orosi National Park for the extra day. Has anyone stayed at Cabinas and Soda El Descanso or know anything about it?

From the description the place(hot springs) and owner really sound awesome. If we had more time we would love to hike Cerro Chirripo and to spend time with someone that has done it many time over in record time would be truly an experience that not to forget. Its getting me excited to just type this...haha.

This is so much fun. Want to do and see it all in one trip...guess that not possible...

Can anyone give us some input or advice on these questions. Thanks so much, Bill

crlover10,
I'm on the run right now, but my vote goes to Savegre--much easier to see the quetzal there, you don't even have to work at it or go out on a trail. 2 nights is enough there, I think.

Also, it probably isn't a good use of time to spend just a single night anywhere except SJ. Rather than spend a night in Poas, just add another night onto your SJ hotel at the beginning. You can visit the entire Poas area very easily from a hotel near the airport. Additionally, the Pacific beaches in the north are too darned far from the airport for a 2 night stay. Just not worth it. I would substitute Savegre for that portion right there, basically dividing your time between Savegre, Arenal, and BdC, with a couple nights near the airport for exploring that great central valley area.

Hope this helps just a bit!

Shillmac has given you good advice.

I am a great fan of Savegre as well.

There is one concern, however. If people on boards such as this keep recommending the Savegre area it will end up turning into another Monteverde....

I think from now on I'm going to tell everyone that the Savegre / San Gerardo de Dota is horrible....LOL

Savegre is a very nice area...great as you already know for birds watchers...a lot of Quetzales...the National Bird of Guatemala...not to many hotel options as Monteverde...if you find somenthing that may be good...please ask a lot of questions if you can..places are very basic!!

In Orosi is the oldest adobe church in Costa Rica...also they have a couple of good Hot Springs..Aguas Termales two huge hot pools...natural spring water...and Los patios...about 4 pools...hot nice spring water...both af them in OROSI!!

If you do not do all in this trip...you can always come back!!

I guess I should start a new thread, instead of resurrecting this old one, but after reading it, I wanted to ask...

Assuming someone was stupid enough to want to visit this "terrible place", how long would the drive be from there to Puerto Jimenez? Is there another way to fly to PJ without returning to San Jose?
