machu pichu and the galapalos islands
I would appreciate any thoughts on an itinerary for visting both M.P. and the G. I. for our family of four[ 2 teenage boys]? We have 14 days and would like to do the 2 day Inca trail hike. If you have the name of local tour operators/guides that would be helpful as well. Cost is not the primary concern and private touring is our preference. Thankyou for your time. Jim

Have you tried a search (for example, "Machu Picchu guide"? There have been multiple really great threads with travelogues and specific guide recommendations in the last year. Same with Galapagos trips, as I recall. happy trails!

Based on recommendations on this board we just used David Choque as a private guide for portions of our trip in Peru. I highly recommend David. David may be reached at [email protected]

Thnakyou as I found those threads very helpful. Would you recommend an extra day in the Sacred Valley or do the 2 day Inca trail hike if time is an issue? i appreciate all your thoughts. Jim

Not sure what u mean by "an extra day..." How much time are you planning to spend in Peru? We loved the Scared Valley and spent 1 night in Pisac (didnt really need to spend a night there, but the ruins are great) and 3 nights in Ollantaytambo. We could have spent more time there. We didn't do the MP hike so I can't compare that experience to the SV itself. I think the villages have a lot to offer which you don't experience on the hike. Cusco itself is a nice town and there are many day trips u can do from there. We spent 4 days in Cusco and again felt we could have spent more time. It's really what your priorities and likes and dislikes are.

Are you in extremely good shape? If not, and time is an issue (not allowing you time to acclimate to the altitude), then I would spend the time in the Sacred Valley (especially Pisac). You'll get some nice hiking at Pisac without killing yourself.
Btw, I highly recommend taking the anti-altitude meds. I've posted quite a few times about why, but let me know if you do not see any of them.
