Kanantik - south coast of Belize - anyone been there?
We went to Ambergris Caye & Cayo Espanto last April & the weather was great then. Saw this new resort was hoping someone had been & could give their impressions. We are always looking for small private resorts with good food & watersports. Also wondering what the weather & insect comparisons are withthe southern coast & Belize City or AC that time of year. Thanks for any info!

At Dangriga, Hopkins, or Placencia you will be pretty well stuck as they are off by themselves...with Hopkins being close to Dangriga...Dangriga is a HELLHOLE...Placencia is quiant but a long motorboat ride to any caye worth diving or snorkeling...no reefs anywhere on the mainland side of Drake's Channel...all the watersports except kayaking/fishing are on the outer cayes

April weather was great on AC & we had NO bugs & I was hoping for the same in southern Belize. Guess not. Is there a timeframe that you think would be better. The resort offers all tours for ruins & watersports so that would be taken care of. It is 18 miles south of Dangriga & we would just fly into the resorts runway from Belize City & by-pass the town. I'm not getting a real positive feeling about this place though! I expect bugs in the tropics but don't want to spend my days trying to aviod them in huge numbers. My husband has had dengue fever & we do not want to repeat that! Thanks for the info.

I was at Kanantik this summer. It's certainly a beautiful resort, though pricey. The beach is typical of those in the Placencia/Hopkins area -- good but not the kind of beach you'd see in the Yucatan.

The thatch cabanas are nicely done and even have A/C (though it's hard to air-condition a thatch cabana).

I thought the food was good, prepared by a chef from Guatemala, and Roberto (the co-owner) was friendly and hospitable, with lots of interesting stories to tell.

You get there by dirt road just north of the road to Placencia, off the Southern Highway. You can also fly in -- the resort has built an airstrip. Otherwise, the resort is quite isolated.

As to bugs, yes there are some. Some sizeable cockroaches and spiders were guests in my cabana. And don't be surprised if you see the occasional scorpion. I was not bothered by sand flies or mosquitoes, however.

--Lan Sluder (Belize First Guide to Mainland Belize, San Pedro Cool, Fodor's Belize & Guatemala Guide, Adapter Kit: Belize)
