iPhone: Give me tips for limiting data usage in Belize

We are headed to Ambergris Caye tomorrow and I want to get some tips from somebody in the know on how to limit my data usage on the iPhone while there. Charging 50 cents per sent text and $1.30 per picture/video message is just outrageous.

How do I shut down my roaming, data and all that?

I guess if I am in a wi-fi zone, I can surf the net for free?

If so, how do I hook to that network? I have tried to do this before and it didn't work, even though it wasn't a secure wi-fi zone.

Please respond ASAP. I do want to take my iPhone for several different reasons, but sending and receiving texts and surfing the net outside wi-fi are not options.

Thanks

I'd ask at your service provider or try googling "foreign fees iphone" or something like that if you don't get sufficient response here.

To turn off data roaming, click on 'settings', then 'general', then 'network' and turn OFF data roaming.

We went to Cat Island and I didn't turn mine off, nor did dh. The bill was over $2000. And, no, ATT doesn't care if you forget.

Yeah, I was scared off so much by the outrageous charges, I left my iPhone at home. It has been a change for me, but I still have the Internet here at Casa Tulipan, which by the way is perfect for two or three and maybe four persons. It's about 2 1/2 miles south of San Pedro, which is very busy most of the time.
It is very peaceful out here, just 100 or so yards off the Caribbean Sea.

We've rented a golf cart and are having so much fun. Will get my trip report up after we return at the end of next week.

Thanks
