I need a cell phone in Costa Rica. Do I rent one? Where?

Sorry, I posted this yesterday, but under the wrong topic...
I need a cell phone while in Costa Rica for 18 days. I'm renting a car from Dollar and see they have them available. I did check with my US provider, Verizon, and noted they do not provide service there. Has anyone rented a phone there? Please advise. I leave in three days! Yikes!

We rented a car from Tricolor in Alajuela and they offered a service to rent a cell phone as well. (Not their cell phone, the guy from the cell phone service meets you at Tricolor.)

Anyway it was a waste of money as frequently there isn't cell phone service. In fact, the only times we needed the phone, it was in areas without service!!!

Yes, it's true, Dollar provides a "free" cell phone which can be activated for long distance or local calls only. Local calls are something like 41cents/minute and long distance 1.79 or something - expensive. we only got it for emergencies but then in the end found out there's a 5 minute minumum or something per day so the "free" phone cost us $35 and we didn't even use it! but it gave us piece of mind to have it. anyway, the bottom line is if you go with dollar it is possible to have a phone. I don't know of any other ways to get a phone.
