Has anyone been to Honduras?
My family and I are planning a trip to Honduras next Feb. We've been to Belize and Costa Rica and, from what we've read, Honduras sounds like it has just as much to offer. We'd like to visit a rainforest, Copan, and Roatan.
Does anyone have any advice on these places? What resort should we look into staying at? So far, the Lodge at Pico Bonito is tops on our list but we do not have a clue where to stay on Roatan.
Thanks!
Kara

I've been planning our first trip to Costa Rica next month and came across your Roatan question as I searched the site. Last summer we went for 2 weeks to Roatan and it was one of our best vacations ever .... my husband, myself and our 2 kids (10 and 12). We were able to fly from Dallas to Roatan non-stop on Sol Air, which was very nice -- the flight included dinner and an open bar. We spent our first week in a house we rented RIGHT on the beach where we snorkeled in the beautiful coral reef in crystal clear water from our house every day, then wandered up the beach for happy hour and dinner as the sun went down every night. We rented the house thru westbayvillage.com (I think it was) and enjoyed every single minute. Our 2nd week, we took a boat to another part of the island where we stayed at Anthony's Key Resort -- our kids attended an incredible Dolphin Camp, working with dolphin trainers every morning, then getting PADI certified in scuba diving every afternoon. It was just awesome. Since my husband and I didn't head out on diving excursions while the kids were swimming with the dolphins (we only snorkel so far) we spent our days hiking and kayaking and hanging out in the hammocks with our books. It was really nice for all of us. Let me know if you decide on Roatan -- I'd be happy to send more information. Katie ([email protected])

I have spent time in Honduras but not at tourist destinations. I am familiar with San Pedro Sula and Teguchigalpa and surrounding areas. I thought the country was beautiful and I enjoyed all the people I met. That said, at least in January of 98 after the floods from Hurricane Mitch, security was a big issue. As opposed to traveling on my own all over Mexico I was glad to be with locals. There were lots of armed people everywhere and we were robbed in downtown Teguchigalpa during the day time. Nevertheless I would like to go back however, I would be super careful. If you go to Teguchigalpa go to El Valle de Los Angeles it is beatiful.

We spent ten days in Honduras in March 2002, visiting Copan, staying at Pico Bonita Lodge, and finishing up with three days on Roatan. It was a great trip. We had out own guide for the first five days so had the opportunity to meet his family and friends and learn about Honduras from a resident. He was also very knowledgeable about the Copan ruins, so we learned a great deal. Our three days at Pico Bonita were very special, and it was one of the nicest eco-lodges we have seen. I can't give you any advice on Roatan, as I would not recommend Fantasy Island, which was where we stayed and was somewhat isolated.
