4WD really neccesary?

We plan on renting a vehicle to travel from SJ to P Veijo on the Caribbean coast. Is a 4 wheel drive really necessary? We will just use it to make short drives to sights in and around that area. (or take local bus or taxi once there) The trip is in mid October.
Thank you in advance.

Absolutely. You're going to want the ground clearance over the rough roads (think pot holes, rocks, large tree branches, and the like). And you're going to want 4wd capability when the roads get muddy and slick.

servicecarrental.com did last 2 years or so ago in a Sentra
from $100/wk had no problems whatsoever.Good highway all
paved down will probably be rainy.Personally do not go
with 4WD unless going off road www.wild-rider.com good deals
on those.Carib side pretty dodgy and druggy rasta vibe so be
careful but lush and nice www.pachamamacaribe.com my fav there
A lockable trunk is nice to have you do not need a high clearance vehicle for the paved roads the cheapo 4WD like the
BeGo are not high clearance anyway go for a Jimney or above
for a serious off road vehicle.

travel.state.gov for a heads up on safety

insuremytrip.com always wise.

Have fun,

It's not absolutely necessary for that route or area unless you plan on going off the beaten path. Although some of the roads are potholey or bumpy there are many residents without 4 x 4's. The highway is fine so it's really the unpredictable things that could cause you grief. I assume you are asking because of cost? Mid-October should be beautiful. Banana Azul is my favorite hotel in the area if you're still deciding.

I am glad to hear that the roads are pretty good. I would rather be looking at the sights than carefully navigating my way down the road. lol Banana Azul was booked, but we made plans for Caribe Town Resort. We are looking forward to it...I can't friggin' wait!
