ZRH landing at 8:30 - on train by 10:45?
As said above - our international flight lands at 8:30 - I can purchase a reduced fare ticket for a train that departs at 10:45 from the ZHR airport - I would like a little more margin BUT the next convenient train with reduced fare departs at 3:45. Long time to hang around! OR could we go to the main train station and store our bags explore the area nearby while we wait for the later train. What would you do?

I have been in and out of Zurich many, many times - but almost all on business - so no luggage. From wheels down I have had it take form 30 minutes to 1:15 to get out to the curb (whihd would be similar to the train station in the basement). Sorry - can;t suggest how long it will take to get luggage - but I would think you have a good chance of making it - if
1) plane lands on time
2) there is no tremenduos delay for luggage (unlikely in Switzerland)
But I would be prepared to rush/jog with your luggage if necessary. If you can't do that I would consider other options.

If your flight arrives on time, or clost to on time, that should be an easy train to make. My mother's flight from Phila landed at 8:40 and we made the 10:04 am train with enough time to have cappuccino at a cafe beforehand.
Since I live in Switzerland, I've flown in and out of Zurich several times and have never had to wait more than 45 minutes or so to clear immigration AND get my luggage.
If your plane is delayed and arrives too late for you to make the 10:45 train, then store the luggage and walk around Zurich for a while. If you feel your time is more valuable then go with the more expensive train ticket.

Hi suec1,
I live in Germany now, but when I used to fly from the US to Zürich, it would take me, on average, one hour to get from the airplane to the train station -- picking up luggage, going through immigration, going through customs. It's a very efficient airport.
You should be fine. You'll probably have time to stop in the grocery stores (on the levels between the terminals and the train station) to grab some snacks for the trip. And also have a nice cup of coffee.
Have fun as you plan!

We landed at 8:30 and had to file a lost baggage claim, and still made the train! I am sure you'll have enough time. One note of caution: If your train is in any way associated with a swiss rail pass, then you will need to have it validated at the rail ticket office inside the airport train station. This may not apply to you, but be careful to read and understand any conditions of your ticket.
