Wurzberg or Nurnberg

Landing in Stuttgart and want to take some time to see other cities in the surrounding area. Would welcome your preferences and opinions on which of these two cities to see and why. I would plan to visit and stay overnight and than leave by rail to ultimate destination in Salzberg.

I can't make any recommendation for you, except that we looked at both cities for an upcoming trip and decided instead on Bamberg. We will take day trips from there to Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Coburg, then take the train to Munich for several days.

I was stationed at each at different times in my army career. We visited both this April. You cannot lose with either. I prefer Würzburg, especially for its castle across the River Main and the walk up to it. My wife is most fond of a visit to the Residenz. We both enjoyed the walk upto the Käppele through the stages of the cross.

IMO all depends on what you are most interested in; they obviously differ (or you wouldn't be asking). Personally, I enjoyed visiting the Nazi documentation center in N-berg as well as the center of the "old town." It is more of a "city" than Wurzburg or even Bamberg IMO but that isn't a drawback for me.

I would have to agree, otherwise, that you probably cannot go "wrong" with either place.

I loved the Residenz in Würzburg. It's my all-time favorite palace. But, as Dukey says, you probably cannot go wrong with either place, or with Bamberg.

They're all interesting.

The Residenz in Würzburg (palace) is a UNESCO World Heritage site and probably the most spectacular castle in Germany, not only because the building itsself is impressive but also because of the ceiling fresco paintings by Tiepolo.

Besides, Würzburg has a cozy old town and you easily find a nice restaurant and wine bar in one of the ancient cellars.

Another aspect: The train connections are good.

Been to all three.....NBurg, Wburg and Bamberg. If you are interested in WWII go to NBurg. They still have the old Nazi parade grounds and the city was rebuilt beautifully. If not, go to WBurg. Bamberg also worth a visit.

Salzburg: We love it. You can take a short trip from there over to Berchtesgaden...another great spot and very scenic.

Take the SOUND OF MUSIC TOUR. Sounds corny, but you do see some great scenery. Watch the movie prior to going.

The SALT MINE TOUR in Berchtesgaden is also fun as well as the electric boats on the Koingsee.
